In one example, the information may be added to the audio signal using at least two frequencies that are dictated by two different frequency transformation block sizes, such that the two frequencies are not fully visible when an incorrect block size is used to perform a frequency transformation. Additionally, in another example, a decoder may compensate for time and frequency affects caused by removing old samples and adding new samples, which, in one example, alleviates the need to perform repeated frequency transformation using different frequency transformation block sizes. In particular, the example methods, apparatus, and articles of manufacture generate digital spectral signatures for use in identifying media information. Initially, a frame of media samples is obtained. A first frequency component having a first spectral power and a second frequency component having a second spectral power are identified by performing a spectral transform operation on the frame of media samples. A descriptor of the first frame of media samples is determined based on a comparison of the first spectral power and the second spectral power. A first signature is then generated based on the descriptor.

The spectral amplitude of the signal at the first code frequency is increased to render it a maximum in its neighborhood of frequencies, and the spectral amplitude of the signal at the second code frequency is decreased to render it a minimum in its neighborhood of frequencies. Alternatively, the phase of the portion of the signal at one of the first and second code frequencies whose spectral amplitude is smaller may be modified so as to differ from the phase of the reference signal component within a predetermined amount. A decoder decodes the binary bit.

The spectral amplitude at each of the first and second code frequencies may be respectively modified to be a maximum in a first neighborhood of frequencies extending about the first code frequency and a minimum in a second neighborhood of frequencies extending about the second code frequency. Alternatively, the phase of a signal component at one of the first and second code frequencies may be changed relative to a reference signal component.
