摘要: A method, system, and product are described for alleviating router congestion when the router is processing packets transmitted by computer systems having a congestion notification capability. The router marks packets transmitted between a first computer system and a second computer system when the first and second computer systems have the congestion notification capability. The marking indicates that the router is moderately congested. A marked packet is then received by the first computer system. The router then drops packets transmitted by the first computer system when the packets were transmitted subsequent to the receipt of the marked packet.

摘要: A host enables any adapter of multiple adapters of the host to concurrently support any VIPA of the multiple VIPAs assigned to the host. Responsive to a failure of at least one particular adapter from among the multiple adapters, the host triggers the remaining, functioning adapters to broadcast a separate hardware address update for each VIPA over the network, such that for a failover in the host supporting the multiple VIPAs the host directs at least one other host accessible via the network to address any new packets for the multiple VIPAs to one of the separate hardware addresses of one of the remaining adapters.

摘要: The present invention provides receiving and transmitting devices for providing fragmentation at a transport level along a transmission path. The transmitting device comprises an interface and a control unit coupled to the interface. The control unit is adapted to negotiate a packet size with a remote device. The control unit is also adapted to transmit a data packet of up to the negotiated size. The control unit is further adapted to receive acknowledgments from the remote device associated with one or more fragments, fragmented at the transport-level, of the transmitted data packet. The receiving device comprises an interface and a control unit coupled to the interface. The control unit is adapted to receive two or more fragments of a data packet transmitted by a remote device. The control unit is also adapted to transmit one or more acknowledgments to the remote device based on the received fragments.

摘要: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for providing fragmentation at a transport level along a transmission path. The method comprises receiving a data packet from a first remote device for transmission to a second remote device, wherein the data packet includes a transport-level protocol packet encapsulated in a network-level protocol packet and determining if a size of the received data packet is greater than a maximum transmission unit (MTU) value. The method further comprises performing fragmentation of the data packet at a transport-level protocol into two or more fragments in response to determining that the size of the received data packet is greater than the MTU value and transmitting one or more of the fragments to the second remote device.

摘要: A computer implemented method, data processing system, and computer program product for efficiently using disk space when unarchiving files in the same file system. An archive file is read to identify a total number of data files in the archive file. The number of headers in the archive file is determined based on the total number of data files. A location in a first disk space of a largest data file in the archive file is determined from an offset in a header corresponding to the largest data file. The largest data file is then copied from the first disk space to a second disk space. The first disk space occupied by the largest data file is then released by truncating the archive file. The obtaining, copying, and releasing steps are repeated for each data file in the archive file until all of the data files are unarchived.

摘要: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for transferring data in a network data processing system. Data is transferred to a destination in which an address resolution protocol entry is used to transfer this data to the destination. A determination is made as to whether the address resolution protocol entry will expire within a selected threshold while transferring data to the destination. If the address resolution protocol will expire within the selected threshold, the address resolution protocol entry is kept or retained to reduce the interruptions or delays in the transferring of the data.

摘要: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for reactivating an existing connection to a remote data processing system. A data packet is created using a previously acknowledged sequence number for the connection. The sequence number is used to uniquely number data bytes sent in a connection, such as a TCP connection. With this sequence number, devices and components, such as routers and fire walls will forward the packet to the destination. A special data sequence, such as a MAC address of the remote data processing system repeated a selected number of times, is placed in the data packet. This special data sequence causes the remote data processing system to wake up from a sleep mode when received by the remote data processing system. The data packet is sent to the remote data processing system using the existing connection. The use of a subnet directed broadcast is avoided. Thus, problems associated with routing wake up packets are avoided.

摘要: A method, system and apparatus for reducing dataflow disruption when increases in path maximum transmission unit (PMTU) are being detected are provided. Conventionally, when increases in PMTU are being detected, an increased-in-size data packet is sent by a transmitting host. If an intermediate link is unable to process the data packet through, it drops the data packet and sends an error message to the transmitting host. The transmitting host has to reduce the size of the data packet and resend it. The procedure outlines in this disclosure obviates the need to resend the data packet. It does so by transmitting an old data packet that has been increased in size. Hence, there is no need to resend the data packet if it is dropped.
