The present invention is a guidance apparatus for movable toy vehicles that includes a track, or roadway, on which the toy vehicles move. The track has an intersection. The intersection has a guidance mechanism for steering the toy vehicles in alternate directions through the intersection. A sensing mechanism, i.e., infrared emitters at the intersection and phototransistors in the vehicles, stops the vehicles prior to entering the intersection. The vehicles stopped at the intersection are then actuated after the mechanism for guiding the toy vehicles through the intersection has been actuated. Additionally, the vehicles stopped at the intersection can be actuated by a timing mechanism after passage of a predetermined time period. Furthermore, the vehicles stopped at the intersection can be actuated only after a mechanism for sensing vehicle presence in the intersection senses no vehicles in the intersection. Preferably, the guidance mechanism for steering the toy vehicles through the intersection includes a rotatable portion of the intersection that can be configured in more than one orientation to guide the toy vehicles in alternate directions based on the orientation of the rotatable portion.

A laser radar includes: a laser, an optical transmission system, a 1-dimensional array of photo-detectors, an optical reception system, and an electronic control system. The laser emits a wavelength of light, and the optical transmission system shapes the light into a beam, and scans the beam along a fan of transmission light paths toward a target. The photo-detectors are capable of time-of-arrival measurements and are sensitive to the wavelength of light. The optical reception system collects the laser light reflected from the target along a fan of reception light paths. The electronic control system synchronizes the scan of the beam with a respective time-of-arrival measurement from each of the photo-detectors, and analyzes the time-of-arrival measurements. The system is configured for all of the transmission light paths and all of the reception light paths to lie in one plane, with all of the reception light paths intersecting with at least one of the transmission light paths.

A portable electo-optical scanner for reading a target bar code having a plurality of bar code elements. The portable scanner includes: a housing supporting a scanning module and an exit window. The scanning module scans the target bar code with a scanning beam and collecting reflected light returning from the bar code. The scanning module includes: a beam source emitting a scanning beam; photodetector circuitry; and a retro-reflective oscillating mirror including a light collection mirror and an integral scanning or beam directing mirror. The scanning mirror is positioned to intersect the scanning beam and direct the scanning beam through the exit window. Oscillation of the oscillating mirror causes the scanning beam to be repetitively scanned along a scanning direction across the target bar code. The light collection mirror has a field of view that follows the scanning beam. The light collection mirror receives reflected light from the target bar code and directs the reflected light toward the photodetector circuitry. The exit window comprises a lens having a positive optical power with respect to the scanning direction.

The present invention is a control apparatus for guiding toy vehicles on a roadway. Preferably, a remote control hand unit is employed that is most preferably optoelectric. The hand unit includes a plurality of direction keys that transmit signals from the hand unit based on their electronic interconnection with an infrared LED and a laser transmitter in the hand unit. The hand unit transmits directional commands to control movement of a toy vehicle through the intersection of a roadway. These control commands are transmitted via a modulated infrared signal that is received by an infrared sensor adjacent the roadway. Additionally, the hand unit transmits a location laser signal to one of many reception points, i.e., laser detectors, located adjacent each road at an intersection.
