User equipment is connected to the network via a macro base station serving a macro cell or a low power node serving a pico cell. The location of a UE within a region of a macro cell or a pico cell is identified according to the signal strength indicator. Then, a weak coverage area of macro cell is identified according to the signal strength indicator and a beam forming antenna of a macro base station serving the macro cell where the UE is located, is directed to steer the antenna beam to an area of the cell requiring an improved signal strength indicator.

This disclosure teaches a method and apparatus for radio link failure recovery by a User Equipment (UE). The example UE includes one or more controllers that are configured to store cell access information for a target cell that is the target for an impending handover from a serving cell, and for a backup cell that is selected by the UE from among a set of neighbouring cells that includes the target cell. Advantageously, in case the handover to the target cell fails, the one or more controllers are configured to retrieve the cell access information stored for the backup cell and to use that information for re-establishing connection in the backup cell. The UE selects the backup cell, for example, as the neighbouring cell other than the target cell having the strongest signal conditions with respect to the UE.

A cell may be predefined for use by the user terminal in recovering its radio connection. Based on providing signal strength thresholds to the user terminal, for use in determining whether to use a predefined cell for reconnecting to the network, the user terminal attempts RLF recovery first in the predefined cell. By providing user context to the predefined cell in advance of a recovery attempt by the user terminal, the time for recovery is lessened. Note that the user terminal also may infer which cells are preferred.

The present disclosure provides systems and methods for selecting a resource for a direct device-to-device (D2D) communication link between wireless devices in a cellular communication network. In one embodiment, a control node in a cellular communication network selects a resource for a direct D2D communication link between a first wireless device and a second wireless device based on one or more criteria including a service area type of a service area within the cellular communication network in which the first wireless device and the second wireless device are located. The service area type is either homogeneous or heterogeneous. The control node communicates an indicator of the resource selected for the direct D2D communication link to the first wireless device and/or the second wireless device. Thereafter, the first and second wireless devices communicate over the direct D2D communication link using the selected resource.
