This makes the conveyance of the developer good, and enables the development to be well conducted and the wear of the sleeve to be reduced.

A process for depositing magnetic toner material on electrostatic latent images formed on an image bearing surfaces includes the steps of conveying toner to the developing zone via a magnet roll having a shell and coaxial permanent magnet member rotating in the same directions. In the region of the developing zone, the toner is subjected to both an A.C. magnetic field and an applied A.C. electrical field so as to render the toner electroconductive. The A.C. electrical field has a peak voltage greater than the dark voltage of the latent image, but less than 3,200 volts, and a frequency greater than v/0.3 where v is the advancing speed of the image bearing surfaces in relation to the magnet roll.

A developing apparatus is disclosed which has a toner bath with a magnetic toner placed therein, the toner being supplied via a developing role to a developing gap between an image carrying substance and the developing roll, and a toner supply bath for supplying the magnetic toner to the toner bath, a latent image formed on the image carrying substance being developed with the magnetic toner by means of a magnetic brush development. The developing apparatus has a detector member for generating a signal when the magnetic toner is absent in the toner bath, a drive member which responds to the signal generated from the detector member, and a magnetic field generating device driven by the drive member for magnetically shutting off a supply path provided between the toner supply bath and toner bath when the detector member generates no signal, but magnetically opening the supply path when the detector member generates the signal.

A toner cartridge suitable for use with a developing device of the magnetic brush type using a magnetic toner for an electrostatic recording apparatus including a hollow, cylindrical container closed at opposite ends and formed with a longitudinally extending toner supply opening. The container has a knob at one end and a projection on the outer circumferential surface of the other end. When the cartridge is fitted in a hopper, the projection is inserted in a guide groove formed in an upper portion of the hopper and the cartridge is moved deep into the hopper. Upon completion of fitting, the projection is released from engagement with the guide groove, to allow the container to rotate to feed a charge of magnetic toner from the vessel to the hopper.

A permanent magnet member and the shell rotate at different speeds in the same direction in such a manner that developer powder, as a whole, is conveyed on the shell in the direction opposite to the rotation of the magnet roll from a doctor spacing of a developer vessel to an image-bearing material. By controlling the doctor spacing to be larger than the gap between the image-bearing material and the magnet roll, an accumulation of the developer powder occurs on the shell between the doctor spacing and the development zone and is kept to be substantially constant. At the accemulation, an understream of powder moves in the direction of roll-movement towards the powder supply.
