A composition C4 substitute is provided, the substitute including 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazatetracyclo[5.5.0.05,903,11]-dodecane (CL-20), optionally one or more nitramines other than CL-20, and silicone fluid. Also provided is an additive composition including CL-20 and bis(dinitropropyl)acetal and bis(dinitropropyl)formal (BDNPA/F). The additive composition is preferably combined with composition C-4.
Abstract:
Reloading apparatus for reloading ammunition shell cases includes a shell case holder having a pair of yieldably biased gripping fingers positioned to engage and hold the rim at the base of the shell case. A resizing die mounted for sliding about a shell case has a lower rim adapted to engage and move the holding fingers away from engagement with the rim and thus provides substantially full length case resizing. Ejector mechanism in the resizing die is operable to urge the shell case out of the die and hold it in position to be regripped by the holding fingers as the die and support are moved away from each other.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a soft point bullet and the bullet resulting there from. The method comprises forming a bullet core of a first material plated with a second material; providing a cavity in one end of the plated core of preferably polygonal shape and positioning a shaped blank of plating material into the cavity; and forming the core into the final bullet size and shape by extruding the core into the cavity to form the bullet nose and encapsulate the shaped blank within the bullet.
Abstract:
A welding method controls the welding temperature, welding cycle time, and welding pressure for fabrication of composite structural parts. A welding unit welds multiple plies of thermoplastic prepreg into welded multi-ply assemblies by concentrating welds along the thermoplastic prepreg plies at localized and strategic positions. Two platens weld a plurality of the multi-ply assemblies into a layup using a plurality of heated pins. The heated pins are hollow to reduce surface heating during welding and are non-uniformly shaped to allow indexing of the layup. After the layup is cut into a plurality of thermoplastic prepreg segments along a layup pattern, the thermoplastic prepreg segments are indexed according to the weld marks impressed by the non-uniformly shaped heated pins. The thermoplastic prepreg segments are formed into kits or wedges by stacking smaller thermoplastic prepreg segments on top of larger thermoplastic prepreg segments.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the manufacture of fiber reinforced structures. The tooling and its use for the manufacture of reinforced structures is described and illustrated.
Abstract:
A process for inducing pre-tilt in alignment of a liquid crystal medium comprising exposing at least one optical alignment layer, comprising anisotropically absorbing molecules and hydrophobic moieties, to polarized light; the polarized light having a wavelength within the absorption band of said anisotropically absorbing molecules; wherein the exposed anisotropically absorbing molecules induce alignment of the liquid crystal medium at an angle + and -.theta. with respect to the direction of the polarization of the incident light beam and along the surface of the optical alignment layer, and induce a pre-tilt at an angle .PHI. with respect to the surface of the optical alignment layer and applying a liquid crystal medium to said optical alignment layer, is described. The invention also is directed to liquid crystal display elements made by the process of the invention and to novel polyimide compositions that are useful as optical alignment layers in the invention.
Abstract:
An apparatus for fiber impregnation for use in a fiber placement system is disclosed. Resin is impregnated in the fiber rovings as they pass through a manifold. The manifold includes grooves for the fibers to travel, a reservoir to receive the resin and channels for the resin to flow to the individual fibers for impregnation. A control system measures and monitors the fiber speed and then mixes, pumps and delivers the desired quantity of resin to the tows for impregnation.
Abstract:
A process for producing high density refractory metal warhead liners from near net shape blanks. A shaped mold is filled with pure or solid solution molybdenum or tungsten powders. The powders may be isostatically pressed and sintered to form a near net shape blank. A hot isostatic press may be used in combination with these steps or by itself to form the near net shape blank. The hot isostatic press densifies the near net shape blank to at least 90% of theoretical density. Where wrought properties are desired, a final forging step is performed. Alternatively, a process such as vacuum plasma spraying may be used to form the near net shape blank. A hot isostatic press densifies the near net shape blank. A final machining step achieves a finished refractory metal warhead liner.
Abstract:
A vibration isolator for a torpedo transducer, comprising a unitary metallic member having an axis, a central aperture extending axially to receive the transducer, a first plurality of pairs of transverse slots extending into the member in opposite directions to terminate short of the center of the member, and a second plurality of pairs of transverse slots extending into the member in opposite directions orthogonal to the first named directions, to terminate short of the center of the member, the pairs being spaced axially and alternately along the member.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for controlling roll of a projectile is disclosed. The projectile includes two sections decoupled about a roll axis. The front section includes a stator and the rear section includes a rotor and a static spin imparting member. The spin rate of the projectile is controlled by utilizing the rotor and stator in combination as a generator to brake the spin or as a motor to establish spin.
