    摘要: In a system and method for automatically transporting and precisely positioning a work piece at a station for processing, a relatively low precision transport mechanism is utilized to transfer a chuck that holds the work piece to and from the processing station. Notwithstanding the use of the low precision transport mechanism, the chuck can be precisely positioned at the processing station by using a quasi-kinematic coupling. More specifically, the chuck is precisely located at the coupling by engaging pre-defined indexing notches at the coupling. The chuck is securely held against the coupling at the processing station by suction. The coupling may be supported on a precision stage, which is configured to further position the chuck with the work piece thereon with high precision for processing at the processing station. In another aspect of the invention, the chuck is configured to securely hold a smooth surface of the work piece by suction. In a further aspect of the invention, the transport mechanism may be configured to transfer the chuck between multiple processing stations. Each processing station has a similar quasi-kinematic coupling. The coupling may be supported on a single precision stage, which further positions the chuck with relatively high precision with respect to the processing apparatus.

    摘要: A rotary transfer machine or rotary index table having an outer carriage ring subject to rotation about a central support frame. The rotary transfer machine includes a plurality of machining stations spaced at radial intervals about the carriage ring. The machining stations can provide outside machining stations on the outside of the carriage ring and inside machining stations mounted to the support frame inside of the carriage ring. The rotary transfer machine includes a plurality of pallets mounted around the carriage ring. Each pallet includes a clamp for holding workpieces to be machined therebetween. Each pallet includes a clearance opening which allows for cutting tools to extend through the pallets to machine the back side of the work piece and to allow for machining the work piece from all six sides. The rotary transfer machine also includes a drive control which includes a pair of servo motors drivingly connected to the carriage ring for rotating the carriage ring about the central frame, a position detector system including a scale mounted in a circle and an electronic detector for sensing the position of the scale and carriage ring, and an electronic controller responsive to the position detector system for selectively operating the servo motors to drive the carriage ring as well as operate the machine tools. The carriage ring is intermittently rotated about the central support frame to sequentially move workpieces through each of the machining stations. The pallets are mounted vertically between a pair of upper and lower ball bearing rings.

    摘要: The datum line establishing tool provides an improved method for deriving an accurate datum line on Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) and other similar assemblies without the need for having close tolerance PCB index holes and base tool pins. The datum line establishing tool includes a tool base and a spherical pin assembly (consisting of a sphere attached to a pin base); and a cylindrical section pin assembly (consisting of a cylindrical section to a second pin base); and a compression spring assembly. The two pin assemblies are inserted into their respective tool base cavities and are held in place with an upward bias by the compression spring assembly against the cavity flange. An improved method is disclosed by deriving an accurate datum-line on printed circuit boards (PCB) without the need for having close tolerance index holes and corresponding index pins. The process comprises the steps of placing the index holes of a PCB over two pin assemblies. One of the pin assemblies is a sphere design and maintains the PCB accurately and firmly in the "Y" plane. The other pin assembly is non-spherical in design and it maintains the PCB in the "X" plane. Once the PCB is stationed over the index holes it is clamped into place.

    摘要: An indicating device for giving metric measurements with a feed screw of inch fractional pitch or vice versa comprises a handwheel for the screw, an index scale and a gear drive, preferably epicyclic, between the handwheel and scale. The ratio of the gear drive provides the conversion. There may be another index scale and another gear drive, the second scale indicating feed in the same measurement system as the screw. Either indicating system may have a supplementary geared scale so that there is a coarse and fine scale for that system. There may be a fine metric scale, a fine inch scale and a combined coarse inch and metric scale, driven by three respective epicyclic gears. One member of each epicyclic gear, normally stationary, may be movable after release of a brake for zero adjustment. The gearing and scales may be within a windowed casing fastenable to a machine, the hand wheel being external to the casing.

    摘要: Board-trimming apparatus including a conveyor for moving boards along a path, with the boards extending transversely of such path, and a guide for aligning one end of each board with a reference line adjacent one side of such path. A saw for making a cut along a cutting line adjacent said one side of the path downstream from the guide is provided. Multiple indexing plates are distributed in laterally spaced relation across the path intermediate the guide and saw. Each plate is operable to select a board of a specific length range from boards of random lengths moved past the plates, and, on selecting such a board, occupies a position in the path immediately adjacent the end of the board opposite the one end aligned by the guide. Positioning means is included for shifting a board selected by an indexing plate laterally of the path into a predetermined position with respect to the indexing plate that has selected it. A terminal portion adjacent the end which has been aligned then extends across the cutting line and in the path of the saw.
