This invention relates to apparatus for arresting a developing fracture in a ribbon of glass by the application of heat of about 950 degrees F. to the area of the fracture and inducing temporary thermal stresses which place the glass in compression, thus arresting and eventually controlling the fracture. The apparatus comprises a crack-sensing device, a control means and a high-intensity heat source which are mounted so as to scan continuously the moving ribbon, and with the heat source being activated in response to the presence of a developing crack. Circuits may be used to move the heat source across the width od the glass ribbon to direct the fracture toward an edge of the ribbon.

Windshields are made from vertically drawn glass in accordance with a method that involves scanning substantially the entire width of the glass with a distortion-analyzer apparatus that produces a trace or other record proportional to the second derivative with respect to distance traversed of the thickness of the glass, and then cutting from the glass so scanned at least one piece of windshield blank, with the windshield blank being taken from a portion of the piece wherein said derivative is at a minimal value.

Method and apparatus for drawing sheet glass, wherein the temperature of the incipient sheet from the line of draw to the drawing rollers is controlled at and along the width of the sheet to effect uniformity of thickness of the sheet throughout its width. Control is effected by establishment of a plurality of series of individual compartments in contiguous side-by-side relation and extending along lines which are generally parallel with the sheet and extend transversely of its length direction, closely adjacent the line of draw. Each series of compartments is allochirally positioned on a respective side of the sheet or line of draw; and each compartment is individually supplied with coolant at an individually controlled rate. By such individual control of the rate of flow of coolant it is assured that the temperature of each section of the sheet, consisting of an increment of length thereof, extending transversely from one side edge of the sheet to the other, is uniform and the temperature differences between one such increment and the next adjacent one are maintained at proper predetermined values. Control of rate of circulation of coolant through the several compartments may be automatic.

HEAT REMOVAL FROM THE VERTICALLY RISING SHEET AND AIR CURRENTS WITHIN THE DRAWING CHAMBER ARE REGULATED SO THAT A RIBBON OF UNIFORM THICKNESS IS FORMED AND AS THE RIBBON IS DEFLECTED ABOUT THE BENDING MEMBER ITS TEMPERATURE IS UNIFORM FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND IT IS SUFFICIENTLY PLIABLE TO FOLLOW THE COUTOUR OF THE BENDING MEMBER WITHOUT DRAGGING OVER CERTAIN AREAS THEREOF.
