摘要: An auto-cycling plunger for use in lifting a fluid out of a well bore. The auto-cycling plunger includes a hollow, longitudinally extending body and at least one first directional outer seal disposed on an exterior surface of the body for creating a seal between the body and a well bore. At least a portion of the at least one first directional outer seal extends in a direction substantially parallel to a length of the longitudinally extending body. The portion of the first directional outer seal is spread resiliently outwardly from the body with an applied pressure, thereby increasing the degree of sealing. The auto-cycling plunger also includes a valve stem including a valve member, the valve stem extending through the longitudinally extending body and having actuable ends extending from the body. The valve stem is operable to be shuttled between an open position and a closed position. When the valve stem is in the open position, the valve member is longitudinally spaced from a valve seat on the body to allow fluid flow through the length of the body. When the valve stem is in the closed position, the valve member is seated on the valve seat, thereby sealing the body and preventing fluid flow therethrough.

摘要: The subject invention is directed to a method for the surface recovery of hydrocarbons from a subterranean reservoir. The reservoir can be a formation found in sandstone, carbonate, coal bed or other mineral deposit formations. The method includes drilling a well bore having a first substantially vertical portion and a first substantially horizontal portion, in which the first horizontal portion intersects the subterranean reservoir. A plurality of lateral well bores intersecting and extending from the first horizontal portion of the well bore are drilled. Thereafter, a drainage well bore is drilled below and substantially parallel to the first horizontal portion of the well bore, in which the drainage well bore intersects the first horizontal portion. The drainage well bore is configured to allow for the drainage of fluids from the plurality of lateral well bores and the first horizontal portion of the well bore, which allows for the recovery of hydrocarbons through the vertical portion of the well bore separate from the fluids.

摘要: The present invention discloses multiple sealing systems for composite risers and methods of preventing interior fluid leakage to the outside of composite risers. Single or multiple elastomeric seals are formed between an elastomer applied in single or multiple grooves provided circumferentially along the outer surface of a metal to composite interface (MCI) of a liner assembly of the composite riser and an elastomeric shear ply provided on the outside of the liner assembly. The elastomeric seals and a seal between the MCI and the liner of the liner assembly provide a multiple sealing system for the composite riser to prevent leakage of interior fluids. In the event that the integrity of the seal between the MCI and liner fails or the integrity of the liner is compromised, the elastomeric seals would prevent leakage of the fluid to the outside of the composite riser.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for creating a downhole buoyant casing chamber. The buoyant casing chamber may be created after the casing has been at least partially run into the wellbore. Some embodiments also allow circulation of fluid as the casing is being run after the creation of the buoyant chamber. A method of the invention comprises running a length of casing into the well to a first step, forming a buoyant chamber in the casing, filling the chamber with buoyant fluid, either a gas or a light liquid, and running the casing to a second depth greater than the first depth. The apparatus used comprises a length of casing, a floating device disposed in a lower end of the casing and forming a lower boundary of a buoyant chamber, a packer for sealingly engaging the casing in an upper end of the buoyant chamber, and a volume of buoyant fluid to fill the chamber.

摘要: A method of improving the quality of liquid coming from a well that has a pump and pipe assembly. The method includes identifying a region of the well that is low in contamination and a region of the well that is high in contamination, and modifying the pump and pipe assembly so that suction of the assembly is enhanced in the region that is low in contamination and inhibited in the region that is high in contamination. The method also includes cleaning the well in the region of low contamination. Modifying the pump and pipe assembly includes coupling a suction control device to the pump and pipe assembly, and positioning the suction control device in the region of low contamination, and forming a barrier between the region of low contamination and the region of high contamination by attaching a flow control disk to the pump and pipe assembly.

摘要: A system is provided for unloading accumulated liquids and enhancing the recovery of gas from a reservoir having diminished pressure. An annulus between a tubing string and casing is isolated by a packer and continually pressurized with a slipstream of compressed gas while the well continues to produce. A unique valve positioned in the tubing string is shuttled between a production position in which production fluids are permitted to bypass the valve to the surface and a lift position in which the bypass is blocked and an unloading port is opened to vent high pressure annulus gas to the tubing string above the valve, lifting accumulated liquids with it. Preferably, the valve is actuated to the lift position by the impact of a plunger dropped from a lubricator at the wellhead, when the pressure in the annulus has reached a predetermined threshold. When the gas has been vented and the pressure in the annulus drops, the valve is actuated to the uphole production position as a result of the higher reservoir pressure.

摘要: The invention is a method and system of separating a multi-component fluid in a wellbore. At least one fluid separation membrane comprising a feed side and a permeate side is incorporated in the wellbore. A flowing stream of the multi-component fluid obtained from a subterranean zone being in fluid communication with the wellbore is passed across the feed side of the membrane at a first pressure. A retentate stream depleted in at least one component compared to the multi-component fluid is withdrawn from the feed side of the membrane and passed to the earth's surface. A permeate stream at a second pressure is withdrawn from the permeate side, in which the permeate stream is enriched in at least one component compared with the multi-component fluid. The second pressure is controlled to maintain the second pressure below the first pressure.

摘要: A dual displacement pumping system is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a subsurface pump, a tubing string, and a surface pumping unit connected to the subsurface pump by a reciprocating member. The subsurface pump includes a pump barrel mounted to the end of the tubing string, and a plunger mounted to the end of the reciprocating member. Valves cause downward motion of the plunger in the pump barrel to force fluid from the lower end of the pump barrel into the reciprocating member, and fill the upper end of the pump barrel with well bore fluid. They also cause upward motion of the plunger to force fluid from the upper pump barrel into the tubing string, and fill the lower pump barrel with well bore fluid. Thus, both pumping movements are exploited, nearly doubling the volume of fluid pumped with a conventional surface configuration.
