A cut lever apparatus that automatically actuates a lock lift assembly to either lock or unlock a coupler knuckle of a freight car coupler. The apparatus includes a cylinder member having a piston disposed therein. A bracket member is attachable to the freight car coupler to support the cylinder. A linkage member is connected to the piston of the cylinder and the lock lift assembly to convert a lateral motion of the piston to a curvilinear motion of the lock lift assembly to either lock or unlock the coupler knuckle. A valve member is connected to the cylinder for communicating a pressurized fluid to the cylinder when a predetermined signal is sent to the valve and preventing pressurized fluid from entering the cylinder in an absence of the predetermined signal. Pressurized fluid in the cylinder is vented to atmosphere when the valve shuts off supply of pressurized fluid thereto.

A lightweight knuckle weighing substantially less than an AAR Standard Knuckle, is described for use in a railroad car coupler. This lightweight knuckle can be used, for example, to replace AAR Standard knuckle which becomes broken or otherwise damaged during operation and requires replacement in the field. Both the contouring and inner coring of an AAR Standard knuckle are radically changed to produce this lightweight knuckle which has all the functioning features of the standard knuckle, so as not to adversely effect the coupling and uncoupling operations of a coupler in which the lightweight knuckle is used.

An improved lightweight knuckle is described for use in an AAR Standard E or F type railroad car coupler. The outer contouring and inner voids of the improved lightweight knuckle are radically changed without compromising the integrity or operability of the knuckle during conventional coupling and uncoupling operations with, and from, an existing AAR Standard knuckle. The nose of the improved lightweight knuckle is provided with a pair of parallel, coplanar flat surfaces between which is a projection which extend outwardly from the flat surfaces and terminates at an outer curved surface which has the same curvature as the corresponding curvature of an existing AAR Standard knuckle. Also, twin sets of reinforcement ribs are provided within the improved lightweight knuckle to strengthen the knuckle and make it more durable.

An alignment device for railroad car couplers including a central flexible portion with a pair of swivelable end portions connectable between couplers of adjacent cars. Each of the end portions includes a protruding stud adapted to engage an opening preformed in the knuckle body. The device end portions and their studs are inserted between misaligned adjacent couplers. One steady pull of the engine aligns the couplers so that two cars may then be quickly joined together without requiring the trainman to stand between the cars during the coupling operation.

A pair of elongated latches positioned transversely to a longitudinal axis of a railroad car particularly adapted to be rotated to an upside down position for gravity release of contents within the car, are pivotally attached respectively on each side of a top of a coupler lock. The coupler lock is an operative part of a coupler for the railroad car. The lock is movable within a lock chamber formed in a head of the coupler and is defined in part by vertical sidewalls and a roof or top wall. A configuration of each latch and relative position to the lock chamber sidewalls is such that a center of gravity of each latch lies above its pivot connection which insures that regardless of the direction of rotation of the car, at least one of the latches readily swings to an extended position to engage the top wall of the lock chamber and thereby prevent an inadvertent release of the lock when the car and at least one pair of mated couplers are rotated toward an inverted position for emptying contents of the car.

Apparatus used for coupling and decoupling of model railroad cars which employs first and second coupling units, one on each car. Each unit employs a horizontal member having a curved opening at one end and a latching means which can be disposed either into the opening or outside of it and can be pivoted into either position. Each unit further employs a locking element having normal locked position at which the latching means can be moved into or out of the opening. A tiltable control lever extends through the member and has means cooperating with the locking element for unlocking same. The units are moved toward each other to couple and are moved away from each other to uncouple. When the units are coupled, the latching means engage each other and are disposed within the corresponding openings.
