A method and apparatus are disclosed for brazing articles such as honeycomb sandwich structures. The apparatus includes a cold wall box-like housing separable into upper and lower sections. Each section carries a ceramic die member provided with passageways terminating in small ports for conducting a cooling fluid adjacent to the work. The workpiece is heated by electrical resistance heater strips passing above and below the workpiece. Means are provided for evacuating the housing and back-filling it with argon. When the workpiece is brought to brazing temperature, two expandable bags are inflated. One bag raises the lower die section to form a general fit with the upper one. The second bag is in direct contact with the upper face of the workpiece and exerts a uniform pressure normal to its surface. After brazing, the bags are deflated and chilled argon is introduced through the die passages to cool the work. Other features include localized temperature control by electron emission or cooling tubes and vapor removal by means of a cold trap.

Apparatus and method, in preferred form, particularly adapted for evenly depositing a brazing powder at the interface of a honeycomb sheet and a substrate. The apparatus is comprised of a head having a working face defined by a porous medium, the medium permitting suction therethrough but preventing powder from passing therethrough. The face of the head is provided with shims of a preselected thickness, that thickness being dependent on the weight of powder per unit area to be deposited. In use, a partial vacuum is established on one side of the head''s working face and the powder to be deposited is placed on the other side of the face, the powder thereby being held to the face. A definite and reproducible powder thickness is established by scraping excess powder off the face through use of a knife edge in cooperation with the shims. The honeycomb sheet is preliminarily fixed to the substrate such as, for example, by tack-welding. Thereafter, the powder-coated face of the head is positioned over the honeycomb sheet and the vacuum released. This allows the powder to drop from the head''s working face through the honeycomb cells onto the substrate surface. Such results in an even distribution of powder on the exposed area of the substrate, and is a practical method of achieving such distribution in that no skilled operator is required.

Inaccurate readings of the air flow in an air flow system obtained by an air flow sensor because of an uneven air velocity distribution at the sensor are reduced in accordance with the present invention by providing an air redirecting means in the air flow closely adjacent and upstream from the air flow sensor. The air redirecting means is mounted for movement in response to impingement thereon of an air flow having an uneven velocity distribution so as to redirect the air flow and provide a more representative air velocity condition at the sensor.

The air mixing valve is secured to and supported by the air ingress end wall of the housing, to in turn, support the duct and the air volume regulator interconnected therewith in out of contact relation with opposing pairs of side walls of the housing so as to provide a compact arrangement of the components of the control unit and also to dampen vibrations produced during the flow of air through the volume regulator so as to reduce the transmittal of noises created thereby to the housing of the control unit.

THE TRUST REVERSER INCLUDES A MOVABLE COWL DISPOSED AROUND THE OUTER DUCT WALL OF THE FAN DUCT DURING NORMAL OPERATION OF THE ENGINE. THE MOVABLE COWL IS PROVIDED WITH TWO SETS OF FORWARDLY ANGULATED CASCADES WHICH ARE NORMALLY COVERED BY MOUNTED COVER DOORS. THE MOVABLE COWL ALSO CARRIERS TWO ARCUATE BLOCKER DOORS NORMALLY DISPOSED IN A STOWED POSITION ADJACENT TO THE INSIDE WALL OF THE MOVABLE COWL. THE MOVABLE COWL IS CARRIED BY A PAIR OF TRANSLATABLE RAILS. THE RAILS ARE EFFECTIVE TO SHIFT THE COWL TO A POSITION AFT OF THE EXHAUST ENDS OF THE MAIN JET AND FAN JET DUCTS. THE RAILS ARE DRIVEN BY A RACK WHICH IS RELEASABLY LATCHED TO THE RAILS. AFTER THE RAILS HAVE SHIFTED THE COWL TO ITS REARMOST POSITION, THE RACK IS DISENGAGED FROM THE RAILS, AND IS MOVED REARWARDLY ALONG THE RAILS. THE RACK IS LINKED TO THE MOVABLE BLOCKER DOORS AND DURING ITS FINAL MOVEMENT IS EFFECTIVE TO SHIFT THESE BLOCKER DOORS INWARDLY TO BLOCK OFF INTERIOR PASSAGE THROUGH THE MOVABLE COWL. WITH THE DOORS IN THEIR DEPLOYED POSITION, BOTH THE MAIN JET STREAM AND FAN JET STREAM IMPINGE UPON THE DOORS AND ARE REDIRECTED TO BE DISCHARGED THROUGH THE CASCADES, WHEREBY THEY ARE REVERSED IN DIRECTION.

A mixing valve for mixing airstreams in an air distributing system including a housing having first and second air inlet passages therein for receiving respective airstreams of different characteristics, valve means cooperating with the first and second inlet passages for adjustably selecting the proportion of air received through the respective passages so as to obtain a mixture of the two airstreams from the mixing valve, and an actuator cooperating with the valve means for effecting adjustment of the same to obtain a desired mixture of the different airstreams from the mixing valve. The actuator includes a thermal motor having an axially movable shaft extending therefrom, a heater cooperating with the thermal motor for applying heat thereto to effect movement of the motor shaft toward an extended axial position, and linkage operably interconnecting the thermal motor and the valve means and being movable in response to axial movement of the motor shaft for effecting adjustment of the valve means.

A lightweight, easily manufactured and assembled thrust reversing cascade assembly for jet engines. The assembly includes a plurality of turning vanes positioned in spaced relation and locatable aft of a jet engine exhaust. Each turning vane is rigidly supported in fixed spacial relation to other such turning vanes by a support assembly which includes a plurality of planar spacer members. Each spacer member includes a tab portion which extends from the spacer body a distance sufficient to pass through a slot in a turning vane. Each spacer also includes a notch on the end opposite the tab to receive the tab projecting through a turning vane from another spacer member. A pair of straps are positioned on both sides of the planar spacer members and also extend through the slots in each turning vane. Tensioning means is provided at opposite ends of the straps to place the straps in tension while providing compression forces on the spacers and turning vanes to rigidly support the turning vanes in spaced relation.
