Electronic control means for a paper handling and counting machine. An LED array provides a visual display of the number of paper documents counted during either normal counting or "batching" operations. The LED display is utilized to the exclusion of additional display devices for providing an indication of a jam condition in the event of a jam by "flashing" the zero decimal digit. A similar indication is artificially created upon turn-on of the machine. When operating in the "batching" mode the LED array, in addition to providing a visual display of a completed batch count, will display a partially completed batch count in a flashing manner. The "jam-type" display is also activated whenever the batch control selector switch is switched from the "count" mode position to any batching mode position. Means are also provided to abruptly stop the drive source for the machine upon the occurrence of a jam condition and also to abruptly stop the drive source for the machine upon the completion of a batch, said abrupt stoppage being accomplished by dynamic braking means. A "leading zero" detection circuit blanks unnecessary zeros from being illuminated. The load upon the motor is continuously monitored and, in the event that the current drawn by the motor increases above a predetermined threshold, a jam condition is created to dynamically brake the motor in order to protect the machine from being damaged due to a jam and to further protect the operator from injury.

A stacker for handling and counting documents such as, for example, paper sheets, paper currency and the like in which the documents are fed from an input tray through cooperative feeder and stripper assemblies which separate the documents to feed them in a one at a time fashion in a forward feed direction toward acceleration rollers which accelerate the single-fed documents to create a gap between documents moving along the feed path. A gap detector senses the presence of gaps for document counting purposes. An endorser and/or suspect examination detector for examining the authenticity of paper currency may be provided downstream of the first acceleration rollers. The stacker comprises second acceleration rollers cooperating with a guide plate which reverses the direction of movement of the paper documents passing through the endorser station to further accelerate the documents and urge them along a convex guide path and into the pockets of a document receiving stacker wheel assembly which delivers the documents to a stacker tray positioned substantially beneath the infeed stacker to facilitate removal and handling of stacked documents.

Apparatus for counting and endorsing documents and more particularly tickets dimensioned within the preferred range from 1 inch by 2 inches to 2 inches by 5.5 inches and in the thickness range from 2 mils to 14 mils. The stack of tickets is placed in an in-feed hopper and is engaged by an eccentric bottom feed picker to drive preferably the bottom-most document toward a drive wheel and stripper wheel assembly to permit documents to pass only in single file beyond the stripper device. The documents are fed in single file between cooperating belts until they are picked up by acceleration means which abruptly accelerates the documents to provide a gap therebetween suitable for counting purposes. The documents are driven into a stacker wherein they are stacked in the same order in which they were loaded into the in-feed hopper. A stacker arm provides pressure on the building stack which pressure is continually reduced as the stack increases in height to assure a smooth stacking operation. The stacker back plate is adjustable to accommodate the documents of different lengths. A single drive belt is utilized to feed, drive and convey documents to the acceleration means. The documents may be endorsed by selectively moveable endorsing means arranged to prevent "back printing". A novel split retainer mechanism is utilized to facilitate fast removal and replacement of the endorser, ink roller and the endorser drum, while at the same time providing the capability of retaining and locking these elements in place during use.

A document handling and counting device in which documents arranged in a stack within an infeed tray are bottom-fed through a document stripping and separating means so as to be fed at spaced intervals and in a one-at-a-time fashion through a document processing stage whereupon the documents are then restacked in their original order. Document stripping and separating is performed by cooperating stripper means and feed means imparting counteracting forces upon documents fed therebetween. Guide finger assemblies cooperating with the stripper means serve to fan the lower portion of the document stack preparatory to being fed between the stripper means and drive means and are further comprised of either resilient members or resiliently mounted relatively rigid members arranged to apply a force sufficient to incoming documents between the stripper and the drive means even in the event that the documents are curled, folded or creased and are further adapted to yield and thereby reduce the force imposed upon the incoming documents to prevent the wedging and hence resulting jamming of documents. After stripping, separation and processing of the documents, the documents are fed into an outfeed stacker having a guide plate designed to facilitate abrupt downward movement of the upstream ends of the documents toward the floor of the stacker in order to be assured that their upstream edges are removed from the path of incoming documents to assure neat, orderly stacking.

Apparatus for feeding, separating, counting and stacking documents at high speed. Documents are stacked in the infeed conveyor and are bottom fed preferably by closed loop belts and an eccentric wheel which continuously jogs the stack. Drive rollers support the closed loop belts which serve to feed the bottom-most documents beneath cooperative stripper means which assures the feeding of only one document at a time towards acceleration rollers and a cooperating platen roller for accelerating documents fed therebetween to provide a gap between succeeding documents to enable a sensor to accurately count the documents. Counted documents are driven from an outfeed location into a stacker having a floor positioned beneath the outfeed location by a distance selected to prevent incoming documents from being interleaved in their improper order and from interfering with the documents being fed into the stacker. The platen roller also serves as a backing roller for endorsing means. The closed loop belts serve to impart rotary driving force from the platen roller to the drive roller and the jogging wheel and also serve as the document drive means during the feeding and stripping operation. The stripping means comprises O-rings entrained about spaced first and second roller assemblies. The acceleration rollers are driven by the platen roller and drive one of the stripper roller assemblies through flexible drive means interconnected by friction drive speed reducing means.

A self-compensating stripper assembly cooperating with a feed roller for separating sheets from a stack and feeding them one-at-a time to facilitate counting, examining and endorsing operations on each individual sheet. Said assembly has a pivotally mounted stripper member positioned upon the free end of a swingable arm. A resilient element urges the swingable arm toward the feed roller and an adjustable stop limits the movement of the stripper assembly toward the feed roller. An additional independent resilient member urges the stripper member toward the feed roller and is yieldable to accommodate changes in sheet thickness. The shape of the stripper member facilitates the stripping operation by shaping the stack of sheets prior to entry into the stripping operation. Separate stops are provided for limiting the pivotal movement of the stripper member about its pivotal mounting.

An endorser drum for printing variable data on paper sheets for use in document handling and counting devices. The drum is provided with a plurality of splined pins positioned at spaced intervals adjacent the periphery of the drum. Each splined pin is provided with a gear-like periphery comprised of a plurality of tapered projections extending radially outward from the periphery of the splined pin. An annular-shaped resilient print wheel, having an interior surface whose configuration is substantially complementary to that of each splined pin, is fitted upon the splined pin. The exterior surface of the print wheel is provided with a plurality of raised characters each aligned with an associated one of the grooves provided along the interior surface of the print wheel. Each splined pin is secured to the print drum so as to experience no rotational movement. Each print wheel may be incrementally indexed, i.e., revolved, about its associated splined pin, The resiliency of the print wheel permits the grooves of the interior surface to rise over the corresponding tapered projections of the splined pin upon which it is mounted after which the grooves and projections of the print wheel respectively "snap" into engagement with the next adjacent tapered projections and grooves of the splined pin to positively and precisely align the next adjacent raised character into the print position.

A sheet stacking mechanism neatly stacks a plurality of sheets, which may be of dissimilar sizes, thicknesses and surface quality (finishes), in the original sequence in which the sheets are fed into the mechanism. An outfeed mechanism picks each sheet into the stacker and removes each sheet entering into the stacker away from the throat of the stacker to permit unimpeded entry of the next sheet to the stacker. Anti-skewing devices are employed at various locations to maintain the sheets in proper alignment during stacking. Linkage means having a mechanical advantage greater than one interconnects a biasing spring to a stacker bar to provide elongation of the spring inversely proportional to the distance moved by the bar in response to the accumulation of stacked sheets thereon to render more uniform the force exerted on the bar by the spring means to provide uniform stacking.

In an apparatus for accurately counting a stack of documents and especially legal tender (i.e., paper money), tests for authenticity are performed simultaneously with the counting operation and without in any way impeding the type of counting operation being performed. At the same time that the counting operation is being performed, at speeds of the order of 1250 bills per minute, each bill or note currency is tested for certain properties of genuineness, including fluorescence and magnetic characteristics. Notes which fail to satisfy the tests are categorized as suspect notes and automatically stop the machine and thereby temporarily halt the counting operation. The suspect note is isolated as the top-most document in the outfeed stacker greatly facilitating the handling and removal of the suspect bill for further examination. The presence of a suspect note further provides a visual and/or audible alarm indication thereof simultaneously with the halting of the counting operation thereby facilitating removal of the suspect note by conventional methods to permit further inspection. The circuitry provided enables counting to be immediately resumed by depressing a start button. The test may be performed when the equipment is being operated in either the batching or normal counting mode.Detection means are provided for testing fluorescence and/or magnetic properties of the bills being counted.
