    摘要: A variable-ratio power transmission mechanism having two output shafts for driving respective wheels or tracks at opposite sides of a heavy off-the-road vehicle, and having a steering mechanism for varying the relative rotational speeds of said shafts, is known. Where the steering mechanism includes a null shaft which is not driven when straight-line travel is required, said shaft has been driveable by hydrostatic means, but these have sometimes proved unreliable. It is therefore proposed to drive the null shaft by mechanical two-speed gearing driven from the input of the power transmission mechanism. The null shaft is selectively driveable by said gearing in either direction of rotation through the appropriate one of two progressively engaging clutches until it attains a first speed, and an epicyclic reduction gear in said gearing is then locked up to drive the null shaft in the same direction at a higher speed.

    摘要: Power transmission gearing has two countershafts both of which are mounted with virtually no capability of axial movement and drivably connected to a common driving shaft and a common driven shaft by gearing. The gearing which connects the countershafts to the driven shaft conprises a single helical gear of one hand on one of the countershafts, a single helical gear of the other hand on the other of the countershafts, and a double-helical gear assembly on the driven shaft, one toothed zone of the doublehelical gear assembly meshing with one of the single helical gears and the other toothed zone of said assembly meshing with the other of said gears. The double-helical gear assembly is capable of axial movement on the driven shaft to equalize the torque transmitted by each countershaft.

    摘要: A vehicle includes variable-ratio gearing driven via a hydrodynamic torque converter. The converter has a hydraulically-engaged lock-up clutch which is temporarily disengaged whenever a ratio is disengaged. The vehicle has a system of hydraulically-engaged clutches and brakes for changing ratio, and a system of hydraulically-engaged brakes for bringing the vehicle to rest. The respective operating pressures in the clutch-and-brake system and the braking system are independently modulated, in order more smoothly to change ratio or bring the vehicle to rest, by enabling a relief valve in each system to open against a determined spring force when pilot pressure exerted on each valve in the closing direction and derived from the operating cylinder of the lock-up clutch is temporarily cut off.
