Abstract: A vegetable snack product includes a base starch, corn flour, whole vegetable flour other than potato and corn, vegetable powder other than potato and corn. The vegetable snack product provides at least 15% of real vegetables exclusive of potato and corn and has a bulk density between about 60 g/L to about 84 g/L. An exemplary method of making a vegetable snack product includes hydrating a dry mix containing a base starch, corn flour, whole vegetable flour other than potato and corn, and vegetable powder other than potato and corn to form a dough containing from 31.5% to 35.5% of moisture. The dough may be extruded through a die slot to form a continuous sheet that may be cut to form individual snack sized pieces, which are then fried pieces to form a vegetable snack product.

Abstract: A vertical form, fill and seal machine includes a pair of reciprocating jaws, located below the product delivery conduit of the machine. The jaws are spaced apart to permit the film tube coming off the product delivery conduit and having a back seal to pass between the jaws after the film tube separates from the product delivery conduit. One of the reciprocating jaws has a toothed blade with a leading edge of the toothed blade extending beyond a leading edge of the one jaw. When the pair of jaws closes, teeth of the blade cut a transversely extending series of perforations adjacent to a transverse seal and cut a transverse opening at an area of the back seal. Accordingly, the machine outputs a continuous string of connected sealed packages having a transversely extending perforation between adjacent packages and having a cut out in the back seal area.

Abstract: A vertical fill, form and seal (VFFS) apparatus for particulates that facilitates the close-packing (“settling”) of the particulates such that a smaller package is needed to contain a mass of particulates in a charge to the VFFS apparatus. The former of the VFFS apparatus, and an associated film driver, move up and down synchronously and in a controlled manner. A partially formed bag, below the former, containing particulates is shaken up and down as the former moves up and down, while the packaging film travels downward continuously in the apparatus. The shaking causes the particulates to settle, and to increase in bulk density. This allows use of less packaging, and lowers use of transportation fuel. In an embodiment, an actuator is in mechanical communication with the former (and its associated film driver) to apply a vertical reciprocating force to the former.

The impact agitates the partially formed package and thereby settles the product.
