    摘要: An ergonomic hand held combined global positioning wireless telephone device utilizes a unique arrangement of components to minimize the size and especially the length of the device housing. To that end, a keypad and a display are positioned on a control face of the device while an ear piece and a mouth piece are positioned on an audio face which is opposite the control face. Further, a GPS board is angled with respect to the housing to provide additional space for a battery pack latching mechanism, a GPS antenna, and a speaker.

    摘要: A method and navigation device for abbreviating names of cartographic markers. A navigation device has a processor, a display, an input, and a memory having cartographic data stored therein. The cartographic data includes names of geographical locations. Using the input, an operator of the navigation device enters a waypoint by selecting a desired geographical location. The processor retrieves from memory the geographic name associated with the selected location, and when the geographic name exceeds a desired number of characters, processes the name to abbreviate it to fit within the desired number of spaces. The abbreviation process involves eliminating spaces, vowels, one consonant of a pair of double consonants, one vowel of a pair of double vowels, and/or one or more special characters (e.g., colons, commas, apostrophes, slashes, symbols, or other punctuation marks) as necessary, to reduce the geographic name to the desired number of characters.

    摘要: A device and method for compensating a crystal oscillator that is not electrically compensated over its operable temperature range. A GPS receiver device stores in memory data indicative of the actual offset frequency of oscillation of the crystal over its operable temperature range. The first time the device is activated, the temperature at the crystal is sensed and data, stored in memory, indicative of the specified frequency offset of the crystal at the sensed temperature is retrieved, and used to control the receiver.backslash.decoder. When the receiver locks onto a sufficient number of satellites to calculate its two-dimensional location, the actual frequency offset of the crystal is calculated and stored in memory. Repeated use of the receiver device permits a database of actual frequency offset data of the crystal, over its operable temperature range to be stored. Subsequent uses of the device permit retrieval of this data for use in locking the receiver onto satellite signals. If such data is not available, the device uses the average offset data at the given temperature. The device further adjusts the offset data originally retrieved or computed until the receiver locks onto the desired signal.

    摘要: A connector is provided for connecting an accessory such as an antenna, external power source, programming cable or the like to a mobile phone or other appliance. The appliance includes a housing presenting an end wall through which at least one electrical contact is accessible, and a pair of posts secured to and protruding from the end wall. The connector includes axially spaced end walls and a pair of side wall portions that are generally diametrically opposed to one another. Each of the end walls include a pair of protrusions that extend laterally beyond the side wall portions such that each of the protrusions of the one end wall are spaced axially from one of the protrusions of the opposite end wall. A spring clip is supported on the housing by each pair of axially opposed protrusions, and the clips include elongated body portions extending between the axially opposed protrusions, and distal ends that protrude axially beyond the distal end wall protrusions. The distal ends of the clips present hooks sized for engagement with the posts when the connector is pressed against the end wall of the appliance such that the connector can be secured to the appliance with an electrical contact of the connector engaged with a contact of the appliance. The bodies of the spring clips are normally spaced laterally from the side wall portions of the housing to define a locking position of the clips, and are deformable to allow the bodies to be pressed laterally inward toward one another to unhook the clips from the posts such that the connector can be released and removed from the appliance.
