    摘要: According to one aspect of the invention, a multi-layer automotive interior trim panel (10) comprises a decorative covering layer (12) and a supportive substrate layer (16). The substrate layer (16) is comprised of a rigid material formed into a predetermined shape for supporting the covering layer. The trim panel also includes an intermediate layer (18) disposed between the covering layer and the supportive substrate layer comprised of cushioning material. The intermediate layer includes a mat (20) of polymeric fibers, with the mat having a plurality of indentations (24) to provide a cushioning effect. A corresponding method for producing the interior trim panel having the three layers includes several steps. The first step is heating the cushion layer (18) to a predetermined temperature. The second step is melting a portion of the polymeric fibers in the cushion layer. The third step is stamping the cushion layer to form the plurality of indentations (24). The next step is adhering the cushion layer (18) to the covering layer (12) and the support layer (16) to form the trim panel (10).

    摘要: A discrete air bag tear seam is provided in the finishing cover of an interior component of an automotive vehicle. An applique installed on the cover has an elongated external decorator head concealing the tear seam. Elongated and laterally spaced retention flanges of the applique stabilize and releasably retain the cover at the tear seam. The applique is secured to a fixed retainer part of the component and operates by releasing the cover at the tear seam to form an air bag door in response to the forced outward movement of an underlying door substrate on air bag deployment. The underlying door substrate exerts a force on the cover and particularly the outer skin thereof and causes it to pull away from the applique starting at the concealed tear seam to establish an opening for improved air bag deployment.

    摘要: A preform of complex three-dimensional shape is prepared by a directed fiber preforming process in which a flow of chopped fibers are drawn by vacuum against a foraminous screen having a shape corresponding to that of preform to be made. The screen has depressed regions that are susceptible to excessive build-up of the chopped fibers. To counteract the build-up in these areas, a baffling system is provided behind the screen having baffle plates which are extendable into and out of blocking engagement with the backside of the problem depressed regions to govern the vacuum draw and hence the deposit and build-up of fibers across the depressed regions.

    摘要: A vehicle interior trim panel electrical switch assembly (10) includes a switch panel portion (16) with a continuous outer surface (18). Force sensitive resistor switches (20a-20g) are supported on the switch panel portion (16) and are secured to the inner surface of a skin cover having a continuous outer surface (18) and forming the outer layer of a soft feel composite. The force sensitive resistor switches are embedded in the soft feel composite either as being cast in a layer of flexible foam or being applied within preformed openings in a layer of flexible foam in certain embodiments in which case they are associated with a circuit module (34) that negates preloading effects due to thermal expansion caused by changes in ambient conditions. In a preferred embodiment the correction occurs due to a circuit configuration that corrects for such preloading effects on a deflection rate basis. The circuit module (34) for each switch (20a-20g) may also include a relay in high power applications.
