摘要: An inflatable restraint apparatus for an automotive vehicle includes an air bag deployment door formed in a trim panel. The air bag deployment door outer surface has an area of 5 in2 to 35 in2, and at least a portion of the perimeter comprises a frangible marginal edge. The frangible marginal edge includes a frangible length, and at least 20% of the frangible length is non-linear. The apparatus also includes an air bag dispenser containing an air bag a volume of at least 90 liters. The air bag dispenser includes an elongated container having an air bag receptacle containing an air bag and an inflator receptacle containing an inflator.

摘要: An apparatus for deploying an air bag through an automotive dash panel includes an air bag door integrally formed in the panel and defined by a door perimeter including a frangible edge of reduced cross section. A dispenser supports the air bag behind the door. A metal reaction plate is positioned between the air bag and the door. When the air bag inflates, it forces the reaction plate to bend around a horizontal hinge line. As the reaction plate pivots it concentrates inflation force along a lower portion of the frangible door edge. This helps to predictably separate the door from the dash panel by tearing along the lower door edge and allowing the tear to propagate up two side edges. In one embodiment, the tear also propagates across an upper edge to completely separate the door from the panel. At least one, and preferably two or three tethers limit how far the door can travel during air bag inflation. A stop member may be included to limit reaction plate bending. After deployment, the reaction plate remains in a position that prevents the door from returning to its original position. A retaining structure may be included to preclude at least a portion of the air bag door from tearing free of the vehicle panel. A hinge may be embedded in the panel in a position spanning a portion of the door perimeter. A hollow channel may be formed into the panel along the frangible marginal edge to create a substantial strength differential with the door perimeter to promote bending along the hinge and/or to help confine tearing to the frangible marginal edge during air bag deployment.

摘要: An interior trim panel for a motor vehicle has an opening for deployment of an air bag and a discrete air bag door that is attached to the interior trim panel for closing the opening and for being opened by an air bag when it is deployed. The door includes a retainer that hinges the door to the trim panel and a covering that includes a frangible flap at an end of the retainer that holds down an end of the door and breaks away when the air bag is deployed. An alternate interior trim panel has another discrete air bag door that includes a bracket attached to the retainer for establishing the location of the hinge line. Another alternate interior trim panel arrangement has an integrated or invisible air bag door that includes a bracket attached to the retainer for establishing the location of the hinge line in an invisible door arrangement. Another alternate interior trim panel also includes a bracket having a V-shaped channel that establishes the location of the door hinge line. In addition, side plates integrally extend from opposite sides of the channel to connect to an air bag canister.

摘要: A method for manufacturing decorative features in situ in a base layer cast plastic material includes the steps of providing a mold tool having a surface thereon which is recessed in the form of a desired decorative feature and includes a sharp break line between the recess and the surrounding mold surface; depositing a covering of thermoplastic material in the recess surface and heating the tool to melt the thermoplastic material on the recess surface to form segments of plastic corresponding to the desired decorative feature; thereafter cooling the covering and stripping it from the mold by separating it at the sharp break line interface between the deposited material on the recessed surface and a thin film membrane formed on the remainder of the mold surface so as to retain segments of material deposited in the recesses of the mold tool; reheating the mold tool recess to partially remelt the retained segments and thereafter depositing a base layer of thermoplastic material across the surface of the mold and reheating the mold to bond the retained segments to the base layer and cooling and stripping the mold to form a finished plastic shell having a decorative feature formed in situ therein.

Each charge box is carried by an indexable carousel which has a drive motor controlled by a programmable controller to position the carousel to off-load a given color to a powder casting mold carrier which is associated with means for sequentially and continuously (1) preheating a mold; (2) dumping powder from an off-loaded color box into a heated mold; (3) curing the cast powder in the mold; (4) cooling the mold; and (5) stripping the part from the mold.

摘要: Apparatus and a process for manufacturing multiple color thin-walled hollow sheels for parts such as automobile door panels, consoles and instrument panels from dry thermoplastic plastisol includes a supply box with a divider to form two or more compartments in the box. The box divider cooperates with selectively positioned split mold parts defining a separation in an open-ended heated mold for separating the mold into two or more sections. Complementary open ends of the charge box and mold are joined. Then the apparatus is rotated so that the powder is distributed into each mold section by gravity flow with the powder from each section flowing to the divider which separates the colors so as to form two or more tones on a resultant shell of cured material; thereafter the powder box is removed and the split mold parts are joined to clamp cast shell segments for fusion at a joint line.

摘要: An air bag cover assembly is provided comprising a retainer panel having an aperture during the deployment of an inflatable air bag for the airbag to pass through. The aperture has a cross-sectional area during air bag inflation greater than the cross-sectional area of the aperture when the air bag is deflated after being inflated. A method of providing an air bag deployment aperture for an air bag cover assembly is also provided. The method comprises providing a retainer panel, forming an aperture in the retainer panel for the deployment of an inflating air bag from an air bag module, increasing the cross-sectional area of the aperture during inflation of the air bag, and decreasing the cross-sectional area of the aperture after the air bag has at least partially passed through the aperture.

摘要: An instrument panel of an automotive vehicle includes a rigid retainer preformed with an air bag opening and a recessed ledge extending about the opening. A separately formed door is installed on the opening and hinged to the retainer along one edge. The remaining three edges overlie the ledge to prevent inward movement of the door. The retainer and door are placed in a cavity of a mold tool in spaced relation to an outer skin and foam constituents are reacted therebetween to develop a foam layer. A foam seal is provided at the interface of the ledge and door to prevent the escape of foam past the ledge.

摘要: A sand-bearing water-soluble stick is provided, which descends rapidly through a column of salt water in a well, allowing the efficient and accurate placement of a column of sand throughout a particular interval of downhole pipe. Methods of use are provided which include sand placement techniques utilizing the stick in typical oil and gas well applications. Sizing and shaping options are provided which assist the user in correlating the sticks to the appropriate piping. In the preferred embodiment, the stick is formed from sand and polyethylene glycol, although the stick can be made with solid materials other than sand, and with other water-soluble bonding agents.
