    Abstract: A method of preparing a biocompatible polymeric coating includes preparing an aqueous polymer solution by contacting and reacting methacrylic acid and at least one methacrylate or phosphorylcholine. The methacrylate or phosphorylcholine may include hydroxyethyl methacrylate, polyethylene glycol monomethacrylate, or methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine. An aqueous coupling agent solution is prepared and is either applied to the substrate surface or is mixed with the polymer solution to form a coating solution. If the coupling agent solution was first applied to the substrate surface, the polymer solution is then applied to the primed substrate surface. Alternatively if a coating solution was created, the coating solution is applied to the substrate surface. In either event, the polymer solution and coupling agent solution react with the substrate to form the biocompatible polymeric coating on the substrate surface.

    Abstract: A fluorine-free transparent polymeric material with high oxygen permeability includes at least one silicone cage compound having at least one polymerizable pendant group and up to seven side chains, at least one acrylic compound, at least one acrylate functionalized compound, and styryltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane. None of the compounds of the transparent polymeric material contain the element fluorine. A first polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) monomer silicone cage has one polymerizable methacrylate pendant group and seven isoalkyl side chains while a second polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) monomer silicone cage has two polymerizable methacrylate pendant groups and six isoalkyl side chains. The Dk of the transparent polymeric material is approximately 150 and the Shore D hardness is greater than 70.

    Abstract: A new class of silicone monomers, providing transparent materials and imparting hydrophilic properties have been developed. These materials are incorporated into ophthalmic devices such as soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. These new silicone monomers include Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) with two polymerizable groups and six organofunctional groups. These types of structures incorporate at least two available sites for polymerization allowing for the incorporation of the silsesquioxane cage into the backbone of a macromolecule. Additional functional sites allow the design of specific chemical features which address needed material properties.

    Abstract: A method of producing an ultra-high Dk material includes contacting and reacting a fluoroalkyl methacrylate; an alkyl glycol dimethacrylate; a hydrophilic agent, such as methacrylic acid; a hydroxyalkyl tris(trimethylsiloxy)silane; a hydroxyalkyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane; and styrylethyltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane. The reaction is conducted within an inert atmosphere at a pressure of at least 25 pounds per square inch (PSI) and for a period of time and at a temperature sufficient to produce the ultra-high Dk material.
