A method and kit for stripping the resin matrix on a predetermined length of optical fiber ribbon, allowing access over the length to the optical fibers of the optical fiber ribbon. A solvent is used to weaken the matrix material over the span to which access to the optical fibers is needed. Next the span is pressed onto a pressure sensitive adhesive and then pulled away from the pressure sensitive adhesive, leaving behind some or all of the matrix material. The process is repeated as necessary.

An improved method and cutting blade having two cutting prongs with sharpened cutting tips attached thereto, for accessing optical fibers contained in a buffer tube is provided. When the cutting blade is mounted in an optical fiber access tool, relative movement of the tool with respect to the buffer tube causes the sharpened cutting tips to score the buffer tube so that a section of the buffer tube can be separated from the buffer tube to provide access to the optical fibers contained therein.

An optical fiber ribbon is disclosed. The optical fiber ribbon comprises a plurality of optical fibers arranged in a parallel planar array, the planar array being further defined by first and second planar sides spanning between first and second ends. A matrix material coating envelops the optical fibers so as to bond the optical fibers together in the parallel planar array. The matrix material coating forms a first substantially planar surface section spanning the first planar side of the planar array of optical fibers. A second substantially planar surface section spans the second planar side of the planar array of optical fibers. A first hinge section bridges the first and second substantially planar surface sections at the first end of the planar array and a second hinge section bridges the first and second substantially planar surface sections at the second end of the planar array. At least one of first hinge sections has a surface portion which extends outwardly normal to and beyond at least one of the planes defined by either the first or second planar surface sections of the matrix material coating. The shapes of the hinge sections enable them to be removed without special tools and enable the ribbons to be stacked. Removal of the hinged sections enables access to the optical fibers without special tools by compromising the structural integrity of the matrix material coating.

A method and kit for stripping resin skin from part of the length of an optical fiber ribbon, allowing access over that length to the optical fibers in the ribbon. The method is simple and the method and kit are environmentally friendly. A strong liquid adhesive, such as cyanoacrylate, is used, with a special panel made of one of either of two materials, neoprene or nitrile, especially suitable for bonding to the ribbon skin using a strong liquid adhesive. The special panel avoids two problems plaguing methods of the prior art: finding a flat clean work surface, and cleanup.

A method and kit for stripping the resin skin (a synthetic material acting as a matrix encapsulating optical fibers within the optical fiber ribbon) from part of the length of an optical fiber ribbon, allowing access over that length to optical fibers in the ribbon, even while the optical fibers carry light signals. A strong liquid adhesive, such as cyanoacrylate, is used, with a special work panel made of one of either of three materials--neoprene or nitrile rubber, or a closed cell foam poly vinyl chloride (PVC) plastic--all of which promote rapid curing of the strong liquid adhesive.
