A hot melt adhesive dispensing system including a hot melt adhesive dispenser, a hot melt adhesive tank, and a hose for coupling hot melt adhesive from the tank to the dispenser. The dispenser, the tank and the hose are heated by electrical heaters to maintain the adhesive in a suitable molten condition for dispensing and for flowing from the tank to the dispenser. When the hot melt adhesive system is first energized, the hose and tank heaters are coupled to a source of electrical power and the temperature at either the tank or the hose is sensed. When the sensed temperature reaches a suitable preselected level, the dispenser heater is then energized by coupling the heater to a source of electrical power. In this way, as the adhesive in the dispenser is heated from a solid to a molten form, it is free to expand into the hose, with the adhesive in the hose adjacent the dispenser having already been heated to a molten state.

A hot melt adhesive dispensing system that includes a hand held gun and a molten adhesive source, the gun and the source being selectively connectable one with the other in a novel manner to permit charging and recharging of the gun with molten adhesive from the molten adhesive source. The hand gun includes novel charge valve structure adapted to interconnect with novel feed valve structure mounted on the hot melt adhesive source so as to accomplish transfer of a hot melt adhesive charge in molten form, from the source to the gun storage chamber. The adhesive is pressurized within the gun's storage chamber by a novel pressure device at least partially incorporated within the storage chamber, thereby providing the motive force to cause discharge of molten adhesive from the gun's nozzle in response to manual activation of the gun's trigger.

A novel handle structure, and a novel heat exchanger structure, for a hand-held adhesive gun of the type adapted to discharge a heated thermoplastic adhesive through a discharge valve located in the gun's barrel. In preferred form, the novel handle structure is positioned at the aft end of the gun's barrel, and has a longitudinal axis extending rearwardly of the gun's barrel and located at an acute angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the gun's barrel. The gun's handle is positionable about the gun barrel's longitudinal axis between at least two operating locations, one being positioned 180.degree. from the other. A gun control switch is mounted interiorly of the handle, the switch being mechanically operated by the gun's trigger. At least two ports are provided in the handle, one at the foot of the handle and the other adjacent the gun's barrel, the power cord that interconnects with the gun control switch being receivable into the handle through either port depending on the use orientation of the handle. Also in preferred form, the novel heat exchanger includes a heat exchanger core fixed in location within a heater body's bore. The heat exchanger core has spiral threads on the outer surface thereof, and the bore's surface has spiral threads thereon, too. The heat exchanger core's threads are sized relative to the inlet bore's threads such that the core can be threaded into the bore, and such that the threads cooperate to define a spiral path about the core through the bore from one end to the other, thereby defining a spiral heat exchange path through the gun's heater body. This novel heat exchanger is particularly adapted to elevate the temperature of the molten adhesive, just prior to dispensing it, above that temperature level at which the molten adhesive is supplied to the hand gun.

The device includes a sensing element in the form of a displacer which enters the liquid through the surface and displaces a predetermined volume. The displacer is located in a surge tank into which the liquid is initially fed and from which it is supplied to the reservoir. The displacer is mounted on an arm of a lever, the displacer being counterbalanced to respond to a liquid level in the surge tank. The lever carries a switch actuating mechanism which is moved in response to a change in the liquid level in the surge tank and which controls actuation of a single acting piston pump air motor to supply liquid to the surge tank.

A rotary coater device (12) is provided, comprising front and rear frame plates (30) having mounted therebetween: a die bracket assembly (100), a screen assembly (200), a heater hood assembly (300), and an impression roll assembly (400). The die bracket assembly (100) includes (i) a die (500) positionable within a screen (202) and having an opening (550), the die being movable from an operating position wherein the die opening is proximate to an inner surface of the screen to an idle position wherein the die is drawn away from the inner surface; and (ii) a pivotable support arm (102a) fixedly attached at one end to a positioning mechanism (112) and removably attached at an opposite end to the die, the pivotable support arm being pivotable away from the screen when the opposite end is detached from the die to expose the screen for removal from the coater device. The screen assembly (200) supports the cylindrical screen in an operating axial position about a first axis (127), and includes (i) at least one guide wheel (206) engageable with the screen and (ii) a retractable support arm (238) pivotable about an axis (72) from a first position wherein the at least one guide wheel is engaged with the screen in the operating axial position, to a second position wherein the at least one guide wheel is disengaged from the screen. The heater hood assembly (300) assures an evenly heated outer surface of the screen. The impression roll assembly (400) includes an impression roll (402) which provides a backing for a web to be coated by the coater device.

A slot coating die (10) is provided, comprising an upper die half (12) and a lower die half (14) attached together with a shim (16) disposed therebetween, each die half extending along an axis (18) and having a front and a back. The front of the upper die half includes a movable lip insert (22) extending substantially the entire width thereof and movable with respect to the upper die half toward and away from the front of the upper die half in a direction generally perpendicular to the axis. At least one adjustable die opening (20), which is adjustable independently of the movable lip insert, is defined by the upper and lower die halves and the shim plate disposed therebetween. A plurality of push-pull bolts (30) provide a coarse adjustment mechanism for adjusting the relative positions of the lower and upper die halves with respect to each other in a direction generally parallel to that in which the movable lip insert may be moved. A plurality of spring (128) loaded screws (124) spaced along the width of the upper die half provide a fine adjust mechanism by which the lip insert is made movable in that direction.

Apparatus for melting and dispensing thermoplastic material including a hopper for receiving solid thermoplastic material, a flow-through grid melter secured to the bottom of the hopper and a reservoir mounted beneath the grid melter. The grid melter includes multiple parallel ribs extending across the width of the bottom of the grid melter. A single sinuous electrical resistance heater is cast in situ into the ribs of the grid melter. The underside of the grid melter is provided with recesses which function as accumulators to prevent the buildup of pressure on the underside of the grid melter upon remelt of solid thermoplastic material located above the level of the top of the grid melter.
