A recirculating document feeder feeds document sheets to an exposure station wherein the sheets can be exposed for copying. The feeder includes a support which receives and holds one or a plurality of document sheets. A vacuum feeder sequentially removes sheets from the bottom of the stack in the support. A vacuum belt sheet transport picks up the sheets removed from the support and circulates the sheets from the support to the exposure station and then away from the exposure station. The transport is of a size to simultaneously circulate a plurality of document sheets. At the appropriate time in the machine cycle a separator removes the sheet from the sheet transport and directs the removed sheet back to the support and on to the top of any other document sheets in the support. A feeding control is provided for selectively operating the feeder in any one of several modes of operation depending on the relationship between the number of document sheets in the support and the number of sheets that can be transported at one time by the transport. More specifically, the document sheets can be removed seriatim from the stack in the support, circulated once to the exposure station and then returned to the support on top of the other document sheets. Alternatively, the sheets can be removed seriatim from the bottom of the stack in the support, retained on the transport while they are circulated to the exposure station once or a plurality of times in order to make the total number of copies required, and then the sheets are returned to the stack in the original order. In another mode of operation a single sheet can be removed from the support, transported to the exposure station for copying one or more times and returned to the support.

Apparatus for producing duplex or simplex collated copies from duplex and simplex originals comprising a copier having a duplexing section with two transfer stations separated by a copy-sheet inverter. A document feeding section circulates and recirculates original sheets, one-after-another, for producing sets of copies in page-sequential order. The document feeder is provided with a single hopper for receiving and maintaining the originals in their usual page sequence or order so that no preparation (i.e., special arrangement) of an original is necessary prior or subsequent to copying for making collated copies. The duplexing section requires only a single fuser that is positioned so that the copy sheets pass through both transfer stations before entering the fuser, thus permitting transfer of images under similar conditions in both transfer stations.

Method and apparatus for producing duplex copies. First and second unfixed images are transferred to opposite sides of a copy sheet before fixing of either image to the copy sheet. The first and second unfixed images may be electroscopic images sequentially formed on a photoconductor by electrophotographic techniques. The first unfixed electroscopic image is transferred from the photoconductor to a first side of a copy sheet, the sheet is inverted while the first image thereon remains unfixed, the second unfixed electroscopic image is transferred to the second side of the copy sheet, the copy sheet with the first and second unfixed images thereon is then transported to a fixing station.

Reproduction apparatus for producing simplex or duplex copies. A plurality of individual reusable photoconductive members are provided in a supply and are sequentially transported around a path back to the supply. Positioned along the path are charge, expose, development, transfer and cleaning stations. In the simplex mode, first toner images are sequentially formed on photoconductive members transported around the path and sequentially transferred at the transfer station to first sides of copy sheets brought into transferable relationship with the photoconductive members. In the duplex mode, first and second toner images are formed on first and second photoconductive members respectively transported around the path and the toner images are transferred at the transfer station to opposite sides of a copy sheet brought into transferable relationship with the first and second photoconductive members. In either mode, the copy sheets and photoconductive members are separated, the toner image(s) fixed to the copy sheet and the photoconductive members returned to the supply for reuse.

A compact electrographic reproduction apparatus having a mechanism for sequentially transporting an information-bearing source document and a receiver member along a common path. By such transport mechanism, the size and cost of the apparatus are reduced due to the elimination of duplicative transport elements. The reproduction apparatus includes a photoconductive member movable about a closed loop path and electrographic process stations located relative to such path. The transport mechanism defines a common path for a source document and a receiver member. Such path is associated with the electrographic process stations and the photoconductive member whereby, when a source document and receiver member are sequentially transported along such path, information from the source document is reproduced on the receiver member. Further size and cost reductions are effected by utilizing one process station to accomplish a plurality of electrographic functions.

Documents are fed to a platen of a copier from two different feeding apparatus, one of which is a recirculating feeder adapted to sequentially feed a plurality of document sheets from one document to the platen for copying each sheet in a known manner. Typically the recirculating feeder is used in making most of the copies, and it may be used to keep the machine running substantially continuously. The platen also can receive one or more sheets of another document from a document positioner. For example, the positioner can feed a document sheet that is too large to be accommodated by the recirculating feeder, or it can feed a document sheet that may not be reliably handled by the recirculating feeder (such as a document sheet made by assembling copy onto a backing sheet), or the positioner can feed documents comprising a single sheet. Also, the positioner can be used for making document masters that are then copies using the recirculating feeder. A logic and control unit for the copier temporarily interrupts a job being run from the recirculating feeder when a second job is to be run from the document positioner. After the second job is complete, the logic and control unit restarts the job in the recirculating feeder.
