Electrostatographic apparatus and method for transferring charged toner present in an image configuration on an insulating layer bearing an electrostatic latent image are illustrated. The technique involves forming a sandwich comprising the insulating layer with a conductive substrate bearing a toner image on its surface, a copy substrate, a dielectric layer, and a conductive electrode together with means for applying a potential to the conductive electrode after the sandwich is formed, the potential being of a magnitude sufficient to create an electric field to transfer toner from the insulating layer to the copy substrate. The apparatus also includes means to discharge the electrostatic latent image on the insulating layer before separation of the sandwich and means to strip the copy substrate from the dielectric layer while the field is applied to provide a toner image on the copy substrate. In a preferred embodiment the conductive electrode comprises a cyclindrical roll having a circumference at least equal to the length of the image on the insulating layer, and the sandwich is formed by wrapping a photoconductive insulating layer bearing a toner image in contact with a copy sheet around the roll with the dielectric layer forming a blocking electrode in between the insulating layer and the conductive electrode. During the wrapping step the translucent back of the photoconductive layer is exposed to discharge the electrostatic latent image on the photoconductive layer and once the sandwich is formed it is unwrapped to separate the copy sheet from the dielectric layer.

A compact, table top plain paper copy machine has a teardrop shaped photoreceptor belt. A reciprocating carriage scan exposes an original document to the photoreceptor through an optical system having a Z-shaped optical path. The optical system and a number of other processing stations are located directly underneath the carriage thereby contributing to the overall compactness of the machine. A pair of pressure fusing rollers fix a dry toned image to a plain paper copy sheet, so that no energy is required to maintain the machine in a warm-up or stand-by mode of operation.

A copy machine for making copies on plain bond paper which includes a photoconductive master on which a blanket electrostatic charge is first imposed followed by exposure of the master to form a latent electrostatic image on the master corresponding to the image on the original document. The latent electrostatic image is then developed and the developed image transferred to a sheet of copy paper. The transferred image is then fused onto the copy paper to produce a finished copy and any residual toner left on the master is cleaned therefrom to prepare the master for further copying.

An exposure optical system for continuously projecting the image of an original on a document table onto a moving photoreceptor includes a first carriage equipped with document illuminating means moved in synchronism with the photoreceptor and a second carriage moved at half the speed of the first carriage in operative relation thereto by a rotary member and equipped with a reflecting optical system. Paper feed means includes a mechanism for temporarily interrupting the feed of paper and then intermittently sending out the paper to an image transfer station in synchronism with the movement of the photoreceptor. In order to rotate an endless support of the photoreceptor one turn more than the preset number of copies to be made, the switches of a program circuit for controlling the respective operations are opened and closed by a control member rotated in synchronism with the endless support. Air blasts or jets or a suction pick-up head separates the copy paper from the photoreceptor. The endless suport includes a drum having a narrow longitudinal slot, and copy paper is transferred to the photoreceptor with the paper leading edge overlying the recess. The paper is peeled from the receptor by a continuous flow of air directed tangentially at the drum or outward through apertures in the drum to separate the paper leading edge and the complete sheet.

Cleaning device for cleaning the imaging surface of the photoreceptor belt is disposed to have a cleaning direction opposite to the rotation direction of the photoreceptor belt. The photoreceptor belt is positioned to stop where the bonded ends of the belt are proximate to the corona charging device. The photoreceptor belt is then positioned to stop where the bonded ends of the belt are proximate to the fixing device when the next image formation is not conducted within a period of time after the previous image formation.

This apparatus comprises a photoconductive belt mounted for movement about a closed loop path through electrophotographic process stations. A light emitting component, associated with the photoconductive belt, produces light images from electronically generated signals. Further, a mechanism, associated with the photoconductive belt, supports a lamp and a lens assembly for movement relative to a transparent document-supporting platen of the apparatus. Movement of the photoconductive belt and the supporting mechanism are controlled whereby during optical reproduction, the belt is held stationary while the supporting mechanism is moved to expose the belt to a light image of a document on such platen, and on reproduction of electronically generated information, the belt is moved past the light emitting component.

A method and device for controlling an image forming device in which image forming stations can form an image on a medium that is advanced past these stations. For each image under formation, the positions occupied by the leading and trailing edges are registered with respect to the image forming stations. Signals for controlling the image forming stations are generated depending upon the positions registered. In doing so, the positions of the leading and trailing edges are compared with predetermined positions belonging to a first and second group respectively. If two compared positions correspond to one another, a control signal will be generated that is associated with the specific predetemined position used for the comparison.
