Zig-zag connected, phase shifting, auto-transformers that provides the inherent ability to block the flow of zero sequence currents that are associated with multiple-pulse rectifiers. The transformer coils are wound in three separate, multi-wound windings on three single-phase cores. A vector oriented winding scheme is provided with three output windings and three internal zig-zag configured pairs of windings. The three internal zig-zag windings are connected at corresponding ends of a first winding to form an electrical neutral. The second windings of the three internal zig-zag windings respectively tap one of the output windings. The external power source connects to a point along each of the second windings of the pair of internal windings.

The rectifier system comprises a phase shifting primary transformer subsystem and a multi-pulse rectifier. At least one series impedance path is coupled to one of three input terminals/leads of the transformer subsystem and conducts one phase of three phase currents from a power supply to the transformer subsystem. The series impedance path provides low impedance to the 1st harmonic and substantially higher, inductive impedance to higher harmonics of the power supply frequency. The impedance of the series impedance path at a selected frequency above a third harmonic of the power supply's fundamental frequency divided by the impedance at the fundamental frequency of the three phase power supply is substantially greater than the selected frequency divided by the fundamental frequency of the power supply.

A desired turns ratio between the two windings of each pair establishes a desired phase shift between one three-phase output of the connected windings and a second three-phase output of the windings. These two windings can be used in combination to drive a load, such as an induction motor, such as through a twelve pulse rectifier requiring two three-phase outputs out of phase by 30.degree.. Alternately, one of the three-phase outputs can be used to supply the full load of the motor directly. A motor control system includes a single, multicompartment enclosure mounted on a skid. The enclosure contains a transformer circuit and a motor controller circuit interconnected so that only external connections to a power source and a load are heeded. When the circuits are energized, access to high voltage motor control components and to field replaceable fuses and output selection switches is provented by a double interlocking mechanism which operates in conjunction with energizing and de-energizing the transformer. The transformer of the transformer circuit includes a tertiary winding disposed radially between a primary winding and a secondary winding. The winding filters electrostatically coupled transients. A conventional electrostatic shield is also used so that the transformer is doubly shielded to electrostatic transients. The tertiary winding is connected to one or more capacitors to filter magnetically coupled transients. A current limiting fuse, a load sensing fuse and a primary make/break switch are connected in electrical series to the primary winding. Methods for energizing or operating a motor utilizing the primary switch and the load sensing fuse are also disclosed.
