An apparatus for controlling electrical characteristics in an alternating current system includes a first level of magnetic amplifiers which are responsive to a primary direct current control signal. The magnetic amplifiers provide secondary control signals in response to the primary control signal. The secondary control signals control a second level which includes a magnetic amplifier having gate windings to which the alternating current to be controlled is connected. Depending upon the nature of the primary control signal, the current magnitude or voltage magnitude of the alternating current can be controlled, both in relation to other alternating currents and in relation to a predetermined current or voltage magnitude.

For transmitting voltage and current between a source and a load, a magnetic amplifier with a power winding connectable with the source and the load and with at least one control winding is provided, and current and voltage difference between the source and the load are controlled by applying a portion of a rectified source voltage to the at least one control winding of the magnetic amplifier, and applying a portion of a rectified load voltage to the at least one control winding of the magnetic amplifier to prevent the current from exceeding a level which can endanger the source and/or the load and to minimize the voltage difference between the source and the load.

An apparatus and method is disclosed for an improved variable impedance transformer for controlling the power from an alternating input power source to a load in accordance with a direct current control signal. The invention comprises a DC control winding simultaneously wound about a plurality of saturable reactor cores and a plurality of AC power input windings simultaneously wound about a power core and each of the saturable reactor cores. A power output winding is wound about the power core for delivering power to the load. A low impedance equalizing winding is wound about the saturable reactor cores for shunting any resultant alternating voltage as a result of physical variations between the saturable reactor cores.

A voltage regulator system for receiving relatively high frequency electrical energy from a source and providing a regulated relatively low frequency electrical energy output wherein a passive device sensing means comprising only electrically passive elements senses the output voltage of the outputted relatively low frequency electrical energy and provides at least one output control signal proportional to the sensed output voltage, and at least one magnetic controller for receiving the control signal provided by the passive device sensing means and controllingly varying the relatively high frequency electrical energy in response to the received control signal to controllingly vary the voltage of the outputted relatively low frequency electrical energy to maintain the outputted relatively low frequency energy voltage at substantially a predetermined value.
