Abstract: Dry descaling of steel strip by a combination of thermal and mechanical treatments. A strip of steel is heated in normal furnace atmosphere to a temperature at which the magnetite scale converts to softer, more porous wustite and then rapidly cooled by air jets. Subsequently, the cooled strip is flexed to crack the scale and abrasive blasted to remove the cracked scale.
