摘要: A heat absorbing body made from a mixture of water, Portland cement, cellulose fibers, and a foaming agent, with or without other ingredients such as water glass and sodium sulfate. Polypropylene fibers may be used in place of part or all of the cellulose fibers. Cellulose fibers (conveniently reclaimed or recycled cellulose fibers) are preferably used because of their ability to absorb and retain relatively large amounts of water in the composition. Various formulas are given for the mixture. The material is used as a filling for the walls of fire resistant safes and storage boxes, and also for the construction of structural panels for furniture and building construction, and for cast-in-place walls and floors and roofs of buildings. In addition to the ability of the material to absorb heat in case of fire and thus keep the contents of a safe or container or room cooler than would otherwise be the case, the material is useful for heat storage and retrieval, absorbing and storing waste heat or solar heat during a hot day, and giving up or re-radiating the stored heat when needed, such as during a cool night.

摘要: A safe has a self-sealing jamb where the door confronts and fits together with the box. This is done by forming the confronting surfaces in the jamb region of a resin material and making the jamb region non-linear in cross section and long enough in cross section so that after an outer portion of the resin material is burned off in a fire, a charred residue and a plasticized portion of the resin material remain in the jamb region to seal the door to the box around the jamb region for substantially preventing heat conduction or passage of hot gasses through the jamb region to the interior of the box. The safe can also be formed in a resin mold for the box and the door with the mold remaining in place when the safe is used. The mold is preferably filled with a non-flammable, thermal insulating material having a substantial volume of chemically bonded water and made thick enough to maintain the interior of the box below 180.degree. C for one hour in an ambient atmosphere of about 927.degree. C. The box then lacks any external metallic shell so that the molded insulating material is exposed directly to the ambient atmosphere after the exterior resin casing is burned off in a fire. This also improves the heat resistance of the safe.

摘要: A combination lock to be installed on a panel such as a safe door, with a manually operable knob and dial at the front of the panel and the main part of the combination mechanism at the rear of the panel. A rotary operating spindle attached to the dial and a stationary bushing surrounding the spindle extend through the thickness of the panel and are made of non-metallic material having low heat conductivity, such as nylon. An operating or driving wheel or disk fixed to the rear end of the spindle has a projection for engaging and rotating a locking wheel or disk rotatable on the bushing in front of the operating disk, and this locking wheel engages and rotates another locking wheel in front of it. When radial slots in the locking wheel and the operating wheel are all in a predetermined alignment, a spring moves a finger on a slide member into the aligned slots, and this moves the latch bolt to an unlocked position. A cam portion on the operating disk moves the slide member back to normal locking position when the dial is turned. A spring connection between the latch bolt and the slide member allows the latch bolt to retract even though the locking disk slots are not aligned for unlocking, so the safe door may be closed even when the lock is in locked position.
