A measuring device for determining the angle of rotation has a coil body (11) having two cores (12, 13) which are approximately semicircular in cross section and are offset relative to one another in the axial direction. Further the cores (12, 13) are offset by 180.degree. relative to one another in the radial direction. A coil (20, 21) in a working connection with a measuring part (22) of electrically conductive and/or ferromagnetic material is wound on each of these cores (12, 13). The measuring part (22) is constructed as a sleeve segment and covers half the circumference of the coil body (11). The measuring part (22) is directly connected by a carrier (23) with the shaft (17) whose rotational movement is to be determined. The shaft (17) is supported in the coil body (11) along a relatively long distance. This has the advantage that the complete sensor can be mounted at a holding device. Accordingly the costly adjustment of the sensor during final assembly is dispensed with.

During the measurement process, layers of material with good electrical conductivity which are arranged on one or both opposing sides of the disk are moved relative to receiver coils located on opposite sides of the disk (16a and 16b). The measurement device can work according to the eddy current measurement method, as well as according to the inductive method. In order to compensate for measurement errors, the conductive layers are arranged at approximately equal distances (a, b) between two coils. In addition, the greatest possible quantity of measurement points can be used for forming an average.

A measuring device for determining torque includes a measuring system, e.g. measuring coils, and a twistable torsion pipe (10) having throughgoing openings (12) extending in the axial direction. Crosspieces (13, 14) of different widths are located between the throughgoing openings (12). Slots (15) are formed across the broader crosspieces (13). Accordingly, at lower torques, the torque is transmitted only by the narrow crosspieces (14). If the torque exceeds the rigidity of the narrow crosspieces (14), the slot (15) is closed, i.e. the two parts (13a, 13b) of the broad crosspiece (13) contact one another. Accordingly, a higher torque can be transmitted by the crosspieces (13) in a second measurement area or, if the rigidity of the crosspieces (13) is great enough, the latter can be used as protection against overloading. Further, it is also possible to provide additional overload protection by providing a recess (35) and a protuberance (36) in the torsion pipe (10). The torque sensor is constructed in a particularly simple manner and can determine the torque in a plurality of measurement ranges and with the aid of overload protection.

A measuring device for contact-free measuring of a rotation angle and/or torque of shaft comprises two coaxial bodies fastened on shaft stubs and rotatable relative to one another. The bodies have on their adjacent outer surfaces an equal number of areas having high and low electrical conductivity alternating in the circumferential direction. The bodies are enclosed by coils connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit. A high-frequency alternating current flows through the coils and produces a magnetic alternating field which generates eddy currents in the outer surface areas of the two bodies in proportion to the magnitude of the surfaces of the two bodies penetrated by the magnetic alternating field.
