摘要： A liquid-crystal display device having liquid crystal provided between a pair of opposed substrates includes a common electrode formed on a surface of one substrate facing the liquid crystal; surrounding electrodes formed on a surface of the other substrate facing the liquid crystal, the surrounding electrodes provided for defining a plurality of pixel regions, to which surrounding electrodes a potential equal to that of the common electrode is applied; intermediate electrodes formed on the surface of the other substrate, the intermediate electrodes provided for bisecting each pixel region; pixel electrodes formed on the surface of the other substrate for the pixel regions, to which pixel electrodes a potential equal to that of the intermediate electrodes is applied; and gaps formed on the pixel electrodes along the direction in which the intermediate electrodes are arranged, each gap provided for bisecting each pixel electrode in accordance with the width of each intermediate electrode.

摘要： A liquid crystal display unit has wider viewing angles and a brighter display. In this display unit, an alignment film is not required to be processed for alignment of a liquid crystal, thereby simplifying the manufacturing process. A first substrate and a second substrate are disposed such that they face each other. A liquid crystal having a negative anisotropy of dielectric constant is provided between the substrates. A common electrode and an alignment film which has a pretilt angle of 90°±1° and which is not rubbed are sequentially disposed on the surface of the first substrate facing the second substrate. A plurality of pixel electrodes are provided on the surface of the second substrate facing the first substrate so as to cover a display area of the liquid crystal. A conductive light-shielding member is disposed on the second substrate and positioned around each of the pixel electrodes in a non-display area of the liquid crystal. The conductive light-shielding member is electrically insulated from the pixel electrode. An alignment film which has a pretilt angle of 90°±1° and which is not rubbed is formed on the pixel electrodes and on the light-shielding members. The conductive light-shielding member is set at substantially the same potential as the common electrode.

摘要： A liquid crystal display capable of freely changing between the state of having a large viewing angle and the state of having a small viewing angle according to one's need, and an electronic apparatus using the liquid crystal display. A pair of substrates having respective surfaces opposed to each other are provided and a liquid crystal is provided between the substrates. A common electrode and an alignment film are successively formed on the opposed surface of one of the pair of substrates. A multiplicity of pixel electrodes are provided on the opposed surface of the other substrate so as to cover display regions of the liquid crystal. An electroconductive black matrix is provided on the other substrate while being electrically insulated from the pixel electrodes, the black matrix being formed at peripheral portions of the pixel electrodes and over non-display regions of the liquid crystal. Another alignment film is provided over the pixel electrodes and the black matrix. A switch is provided to divide a pixel region formed corresponding to each pixel electrode into two by applying a potential to the black matrix. The switch changes the two pixel regions formed corresponding to each pixel electrode into one when no potential is applied to the black matrix.
