    摘要: A method of sensing the optical deflection function of an approximately cylindrical object, such as an optical fibre preform, comprises illuminating the object with collimated light; focusing the transmitted light so that in the focal plane the distance of the light from the optical axis is linearly proportional to the angle through which light has been deviated by the object; optically modulating the focused light so that a property of the light varies as a function of said distance, and calculating the deflection function from the modulated light. The modulations may be spatial or temporal. The refractive index profile can also be calculated.

    摘要: The invention relates to a method and system for measuring the internal refractive index of an optical fiber preform with high precision. The internal refractive index of an optical fiber preform (2) is measured from the state of bending of a light ray (4) passing across the optical fiber preform (2), so that the refractive index distribution of the optical fiber preform (2) is found on the basis of the angle of bending of the light ray calculated from a specific relation between a light ray start position (8) and a light ray detection position (9). The surface of a light source (1) is scanned by a knife-edge (6) and the light ray start position (8) on the light source is determined depending on the interception of the light ray (4) by the knife-edge (6) or the de-interception of the light ray, thereby learning the start position (8) of the detected light ray (4) on the light source (1).

    摘要: A liquid refractometer comprising a light source unit, a probe unit and a detection unit. The light source unit generates a beam of polarized mixed light composed of two coherent light waves that have been linearly polarized in directions at right angles to each other. The probe unit contains a polarization separation portion, a sample holding portion, a reference portion and a beam mixing portion. The polarization separation portion separates the mixed light beam back into the two polarized waves and directs one of the beams through the sample portion and the other beam through the reference portion. The mixing portion re-mixes the two waves after having passed through the sample holding portion and the reference portion. The detection unit receives the re-mixed light and measures the refractive index differences between the liquid sample and the reference portion. Fiber optics optically connect the light source unit, the probe unit and the detector unit.

    摘要: The internal refractive index distribution of an optical fiber preform is measured by providing a generally-cylindrical optical fiber preform having an uneven internal refractive index distribution. A picture image is placed at one side of the optical fiber preform, and a deflected picture of the picture image is photographed through the optical fiber preform using a photographing unit placed at the other side of the optical fiber preform. A deflection function is obtained by analyzing the deflected picture of the picture image. The internal refractive index distribution of the optical fiber preform is measured in accordance with the deflection function obtained.
