摘要: In a reflectometer measurement for measuring—in response to a stimulus signal—return signals reflected and/or backscattered in a network to be measured, operation for receiving the return signals is temporarily disabled or at least suppressed during such operation modes, wherein return signals resulting from closer ranges of the network can cause substantial spurious signals to be added to return signals resulting from more distant ranges of the network.

摘要: Various optical apparatus provide a source of parallel light (7, 75). The parallel light (7, 75) is generally achieved by directing an incident beam at the apex of a prism (1, 22, 24, 26, 28). The prism may have varying configurations. One configuration has a forward conical face (24). Another configuration has a pyramidal forward end (22). Other configurations are also disclosed. The application also discloses the use of reflectors (20, 78, 216, 316, 400) having internal reflective surfaces shaped as three-dimensional figures of revolution, for example paraboloid or ellipsoid. The reflectors (20, 78, 216, 316) focus light incident onto the reflectors at one or more foci (F, 220, 320, 420). The reflectors may be used in combination with the optical apparatus including the prisms (1, 22, 24, 26, 28). The reflectors (20, 78, 216, 316) may be used in flow cytometers for focussing light at a sample stream (237, 337) passing through the focus (F, 220, 320, 420) of the reflector (20, 78, 216, 316). The collection of scattered and/or fluorescent light from an illuminated sample stream (237, 337) in a flow cytometer may be achieved with the use of a collector shaped as a figure of revolution e.g. paraboloid or ellipsoid. Various optical methods and methods for flow cytometry are also disclosed.

摘要: The present invention relates to a mass-flow sensor that measures the mass flow of conveyed reflective materials, such as cotton, in a stream of air or non-opaque fluid. In particular, the mass-flow sensor of the present invention may be used with a GPS receiver as a cotton yield monitor when mounted on a cotton harvester. It can also be used to measure mass flow of the various cotton component streams in a cotton gin. The mass flow measurements may be made non-intrusively and in real time. The present invention also relates to a method for measuring mass flow using the mass-flow sensor of the present invention.

摘要: The disclosed invention provides methods and instruments for fluorescence detection making it possible to separate and detect analytes of a plurality of species in a migration (separation) channel with length of the order of millimeters. Analyte samples disperse across the whole detection region of a migration channel filled with a sieving matrix. Electrodes located in contact with a power supply and the sieving matrix cause the analytes to electophoretically migrate at predetermined velocity V. The detection region is irradiated by excitation light whose intensity changes in a cycle equaling pitch p in the direction that the analytes move. Fluorescence emission from the analytes exposed to the excitation light is detected by a detector. Fluctuation &dgr;i (t) of output current from the detector is analyzed by a spectrum analyzer and the obtained spectrum is displayed. Florescence detection according to the invention is not affected by band broadening of analytes injected into the sample injection end of the migration channel.

摘要: Apparatus for detecting light scattered by a small particle (e.g., a blood cell) irradiated by a light beam comprises one or more photodetectors and a plurality of optical fibers that serve to optically couple the scattered light and the photodetector(s). To enhance the efficiency of such optical coupling, a portion of each of the optical fibers in the vicinity of its light-collecting end is supported so that its optical axis extends towards the light-scattering source. By this arrangement, scattered light enters each fiber from a direction substantially parallel to the fiber axis. Preferably, the light-collecting ends of the optical fibers are supported on a concave surface and so that the respective optical axes of the fibers converge at a point representing the apparent position of the light-scattering source, taking into account the refractive effects of an optical flow cell through which scattering is detected. Preferably, both forward- and back-scattered light are detected by the apparatus of the invention.
