摘要: A package for sterile delivery of medical implants such as, for example, wire piston prostheses, includes a tray defining a compartment, an insert removably disposed in the tray, and a lid mounted by the tray for sliding movement relative thereto. The medical implant is held by the insert in a specific position above a bottom wall of the compartment and with a longitudinal axis of the implant aligned with a recess in a wall of the compartment to permit the implant to be grasped with forceps for proper presentation at the operative site.

摘要: A vocal cord medialization prosthesis includes a preformed and presized vocal cord engagement member. The engagement member has a base surface and an engagement surface that is inclined a predetermined amount with respect to the base surface. Measurement indicia is provided on the engagement member to indicate elevation of the engagement surface at predetermined points along the prosthesis. A vocal cord medialization tool is used to measure displacement of a vocal cord to an optimum phonation and breathing position before insertion of the prosthesis. The medialization tool provides measurements that correspond to sizing indicia on the prosthesis. The prosthesis can thus be trimmed to eliminate elevations that are unnecessary for obtaining optimum positioning of a vocal cord. One embodiment of the medialization tool also includes provision for measuring the thickness of a thyroid cartilage.

摘要: An indwelling device for passing fluids into or out of the body includes an inflatable cuff for lodging the device within a body passage. The inflatable cuff is inflated with a fluid such as saline. Prior to the inflation process a dye dispersant material such as methylene blue is incorporated in dry form within the inflation cuff and/or within an inflation lumen which leads to the inflation cuff and/or within a pilot balloon which is accessed by a source of saline fluid. Thus, as the cuff is inflated with saline, the methylene blue dissolves and disperses in the saline enabling the saline to take on the color of the methylene blue dye. A buffer is combined with the methylene blue to enhance the dispersal of the dye in the saline. Potential piercing of the expanded cuff after it is filled with methylene blue provides a blue stain or leak that is easily recognized as a sign of damage to the cuff. Correction steps can thus be taken to repair or replace the endotracheal tube as soon as the leak is recognized.

摘要: A method of tongue reduction by thermal ablation using high intensity focused ultrasound includes the steps of introducing an ultrasound emitting member in a patient's oral cavity, positioning the ultrasound emitting member adjacent an external surface of the tongue, emitting ultrasound energy from the ultrasound emitting member into tissue of the tongue, focusing the ultrasound energy within the tongue at a focusing zone contained in a target area disposed beneath the external surface, heating the tissue with the focused ultrasound energy such that the tissue at the target area is heated to an ablative temperature to form a lesion and withdrawing the ultrasound emitting member from the oral cavity. The lesion is allowed to be absorbed by the patient's body and/or to remain as altered tissue such that the tongue is reduced in size to correspondingly increase the size of the patient's airway and/or is stiffened to resist vibration. The lesion begins a predetermined distance from the external surface of the tongue such that the mucosa remains undamaged and preserved.

摘要: A method of skin rejuvenation by thermal ablation using high intensity focused ultrasound energy includes the steps of positioning an ultrasound emitting member adjacent an external surface of the skin, emitting ultrasound energy from the ultrasound emitting member into the skin, focusing the ultrasound energy in the skin, ablating the skin with the focused ultrasound energy to form an ablated tissue area below the external surface of the skin containing unablated tissue of the skin and a plurality of lesions at which the tissue of the skin is ablated, and removing the ultrasound emitting member from adjacent the external surface of the skin. The lesions cause collagen production by the skin to be stimulated. The lesions can begin and end at predetermined depths beneath the external surface of the skin so that the epidermis and the deep layer of the dermis are not damaged.

摘要: An antimicrobial tympanostomy tube used to alleviate bacteriostatic infections following myringotomy which is compatible with otologic tissue associated with the middle ear. The tube is formed from a microporous thermoplastic or thermoset resin having incorporated therein 0.5 to about 15% by weight of a silver compound capable of migrating to the surface of tube sidewalls to impart a therapeutically effective level of antibacterial activity throughout the sidewall surface so as to provide long-term prevention of infections which may otherwise result during or after surgery or implantation of the tube.
