Abstract:
A system and method are provided to selectively control lubricant supply flow to a rotating machine that is installed in an aircraft having ram air turbine that is movable between at least a deployed position and a stowed position. A controller determines at least when the ram air turbine is in the deployed position, and determining when rotational speed of the rotating machine exceeds a predetermined value. The electric motor driven lubrication pump is at least selectively energized to control the measured lubricant pressure to a predetermined minimum pressure at least when the ram air turbine is deployed and the rotational speed exceeds the predetermined value.
Abstract:
A system and method for precisely controlling lubricant supply flow to one or more rotating machines in an aircraft includes a motor, a pump, and a motor control unit. The motor is coupled to receive motor speed commands and, in response to the commands, rotates at the commanded motor speed and supplies a drive force to the pump. The pump, upon receipt of the drive force, draws lubricant from a lubricant source and supplies it to a rotating machine. The motor control unit determines a scheduled lubricant supply pressure based at least in part on lubricant temperature, rotating machine rotational speed, and one or more aircraft operating conditions, and to supplies the motor speed commands to the motor that cause the pump to supply lubricant at the scheduled lubricant supply pressure.
Abstract:
A lubrication system is provided for an aircraft turbine machine, the lubrication system being controlled by a closed-loop logic arrangement, wherein the oil pressure of a lubricant circulated therein is monitored and altered according to attitude data, acceleration data, operating mode data, or some combination thereof contained in a signal received from an airframe flight controller and according to a oil pressure signal and an oil temperature signal. The logic responsively provides a supply pump speed control signal, according to a predetermined target oil pressure value selected to correspond to the data contained in the signals. The target value may be continuously compared to the present oil pressure value and the present oil pressure adjusted by sending a motor control signal to the supply pump and a valve flow control signal to a flow control valve that conditionally allows oil from the outlet side of the supply pump to be fed back to its inlet side.
Abstract:
A system and method are provided for controlling an electric motor driven lubrication supply pump that is supplied with electrical power from a power bus, and that supplies lubricant to a rotating machine that is at least part of a vehicle subsystem. A determination is made that the subsystem is being started-up. Moreover, one or more lubricant parameters, power bus electrical state, and one or more lubricant load states are determined. The electrical power supplied from the power bus to the electric motor is varied, based on the one or more lubricant parameters, the power bus electrical state, and the one or more lubricant load states.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method is provided to start gas turbine engines at cold start. A gearbox is not mechanically coupled to any accessory or to the starter-generator. Rather, a controller is used to route power to a starter-generator to rotate the turbine mainshaft to start the gas turbine engine. The controller prevents power to an accessory drive motor, until the starter-generator creates a positive torque. When a positive torque is reached, excess power is routed to the accessory drive motor, typically a brushless direct current motor.
