摘要： The subject invention pertains to a device for operating upon a filter-rod lengths comprising a first conveyor for transferring the filter lengths from a supply outlet to a plurality of further conveyors. The further conveyors carry the filter lengths past a heat rod-forming elements and a barrier-depositing assembly. All the conveyors are driven from a single power source. The first conveyor may be selectively manually disengaged from the power source so that filter-rod lengths which have passed the first conveyor can be cleared from the device before the device is shut down.

摘要： A method of marking a smoking-article exterior wrapping, particularly a cigarette wrapping, in which the wrapping, comprising a substance which causes or undergoes a permanent change of color under the action of the application or transmission of energy, is subjected to energy over an area of a conformation corresponding to the required marking, whereby a color change is caused over the area. The energy transmission may advantageously take the form of heat conduction. Alternatively, the energy transmission may take the form of electromagnetic or corpuscular radiation or irradiation.The wrapping and a heated former of conformation may be brought into contact with each other or may be maintained in contact with each other under pressure. The wrapping may already form part of a smoking article when wrapping is being subjected to energy transmission. The smoking article may in this case be rolled about the longitudinal axis thereof in contact with a former, which may mould an impression into wrapping. The method is advantageously performed on a filter-tip assembling machine.The wrapping may be tipping wrapping composed at least substantially wholly of cellulose fibres or comprise a major proportion of polypropylene fibres and a minor proportion of cellulose fibres.A smoking article according to the invention may comprise a wrapping bearing a marking which has been produced by wrapping having been subjected to energy transmission to effect a color change of said wrapping.

摘要： For shaping a component of a smoke filter, a rod of the material to be shaped and a heated former are relatively moved in contact with each other, in an arcuate path, in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the rod, whereby an impression, for example an annular or helical groove, is produced in the rod by the former. For the said relative movement, the rod may be supported at the periphery of a rotor, while the former comprises a heated arcuate stator element or elements projecting inwardly towards the rotor. The rod may be turned about its axis during the relative movement, for example by a pair of rollers by which it is supported at the periphery of the rotor. A surface or surfaces bounding the impression, for example the bottom surface of a groove, may be sealed, during the shaping operation, so as to be smoke-impervious.

摘要： A filter element for a smoking article, such as a cigarette, comprises a generally cylindrical body having at least one helical groove in its peripheral surface and closely wrapped in a material pervious to vapor-phase constituents of the smoke, whereby such constituents are removed by diffusion thereof through said material during passage of the smoke along the groove. The body may be wholly or in part of a filter material capable of removing particulate-phase constituents from the smoke during its passage through the element. Suitably the groove extends from the upstream end face of the body to a point short of the downstream end face, where it opens into a space separated from the downstream end by an ungrooved portion of smoke-filter material. One or more faces of the groove and/or said upstream end face may be partially or wholly sealed against penetration of smoke into the body.

A smoking article according to the invention may have segments of a high level of tobacco-containing material interconnected by segments of low level of tobacco-containing material which are capable of maintaining smoulder in the inter-puff period and re-igniting the segments of a high level of tobacco-containing material in the puff period. Alternatively, a smoking article according to another aspect of the invention may have a lengthwise, axially extending, tobacco-containing fuse portion which sustains smoulder in the inter-puff period when surrounding tobacco material is substantially extinguished and which re-ignites the extinguished material on puffing of the smoking article.
