Several such dressings may be arranged next to each other in the axial direction of the cylinder. The pressing elements, used in connection with one of the plurality of dressings, are operable independently of other pressing elements that are used in connection with other ones of the dressings. These pressing elements may be provided as roller elements. Additional pressing elements are located, spaced in a circumferential direction of the cylinder, from the other pressing elements. Those additional pressing elements may be positioned before, in a direction of cylinder rotation, the other pressing elements.

    摘要: A method of marking a smoking-article exterior wrapping, particularly a cigarette wrapping, in which the wrapping, comprising a substance which causes or undergoes a permanent change of color under the action of the application or transmission of energy, is subjected to energy over an area of a conformation corresponding to the required marking, whereby a color change is caused over the area. The energy transmission may advantageously take the form of heat conduction. Alternatively, the energy transmission may take the form of electromagnetic or corpuscular radiation or irradiation.The wrapping and a heated former of conformation may be brought into contact with each other or may be maintained in contact with each other under pressure. The wrapping may already form part of a smoking article when wrapping is being subjected to energy transmission. The smoking article may in this case be rolled about the longitudinal axis thereof in contact with a former, which may mould an impression into wrapping. The method is advantageously performed on a filter-tip assembling machine.The wrapping may be tipping wrapping composed at least substantially wholly of cellulose fibres or comprise a major proportion of polypropylene fibres and a minor proportion of cellulose fibres.A smoking article according to the invention may comprise a wrapping bearing a marking which has been produced by wrapping having been subjected to energy transmission to effect a color change of said wrapping.

    摘要: The invention provides a cutoff control system having a capture range equal to the length of the image (signature) which is highly tolerant of spurious transitions, such as lateral shifting and instantaneous interruptions of the web. A highly pipelined hardware correlation unit, cooperating with several high speed RAM devices having independent address generators, is used to cross-correlate new patterns with a reference pattern. An illustrated system for relating a cyclical machine operation to the position of images on a web includes position adjustment means (24,30,84) responsive to control signals for varying the effective position of the machine operation along the moving web, means (34,40,50) for generating image signatures indicative of the image at respective sampling intervals during the matching operation cycle for respective machine cycles, means (56,58,68,72) for selectively generating reference pattern indicia from a first image signature and for selectively generating comparative indicia from a successive image signature, means (71) for generating correlation cooeficients in accordance with the differences between the reference pattern and shifted versions of the comparative indicia, means (68,69,70) for processing the correlation coefficients to determine which of the comparative indicia produced the largest correlation coeficient and generating an indicating signal in response thereto, and means (80) for generating the control signals to the position adjustment means in accordance with the indicating signal.

Separate application and subtractive roller systems control the ink film on the form roller. The clean-up roller removes residual ink from non-image areas on the printing plate.
