A connection system is provided for mounting apertured components such as gears, pulleys, rollers and the like on shafts. In preferred form, the system of the invention provides connections that are releasable so that shaft-mounted components can be repositioned, removed, serviced and/or replaced. A component that is to be mounted on a shaft is provided with a mounting hole that has an inner diameter that loosely receives the outer diameter of a shaft onto which the component is to be mounted. A ring of elastomeric material is inserted into an annular space that is defined at a location between the inner diameter of the mounting hole and the outer diameter of the shaft; and, the elastomeric material is tightly clamped between a pair of relatively axially movable clamping members that extend into opposed end regions of the annular space. Typically, the clamped elastomeric material includes one or a combination of sleeve-like and/or O-ring-like members that are so tightly clamped toward each other as to be "hydro-elastomerically" compressed between the clamping members. In one embodiment, the elastomeric material directly engages both the inner diameter of the mounting hole and the outer diameter of the shaft. In another embodiment, a thin-walled sleeve assists in filling such space as exists between the inner diameter of the mounting hole and outer diameter of the shaft. In preferred form, the sleeve has an internal diameter that closely surrounds the outer diameter of the shaft, and has an external diameter that cooperates with the inner diameter of the mounting hole to define the annular space.

A composite rotary drive member such as a gear, pulley or the like is formed from thermoplastics material that is molded in situ about one or more metal inserts. A circumferentially extending drive formation of desired shape and size is defined by the molded plastics material, and is molded without a need for conventional measures to compensate for shrinkage. The drive member is formed by first forming a composite preform member that has injection molded thermoplastics material with peripheral portions extending about one or more metal inserts. A band-like ring of injection molded thermoplastics material is molded to extend contiguously and continuously about peripheral surface portions of the molded commposite preform member, with the plastics material of the band-like ring and of the composite preform member uniting to form a single plastics structure. Because the configuration of the drive surface is determined solely by the molding of the outer band-like ring of thermoplastics material, and because the band-like ring is so thin that it encurs a neglibible amount of shrinkage, wheels, gears, pulleys and the like of a very wide range of diameters and torque capacities can be formed inexpensively and accurately without a need to compensate for shrinkage.

A finishing machine is provided with a closure which is movable to selectively open or restrict a discharge opening for selectively discharging or retaining materials in the tub of the machine. A pneumatic bellows moves the closure toward a discharge restricting position when supplied with pressurized air. The pressure of the air supplied to the bellows is monitored, and if it exceeds a predetermined magnitude before the closure reaches a discharge restricting position indicating that an object has been trapped by the closure, the movement of the closure is stopped, reversed, and reinitiated to release the object and subsequently move the closure to a discharge restricting position.

A rotary drive member such as a gear or pulley has a hub portion that can be mounted on a shaft for rotation about the axis of the shaft, a rim portion that can be engaged by another drive member such as a gear, chain or belt as the rotary drive member rotates about the axis of the shaft, and a radially extending web that rigidly interconnects the hub and rim portions. The rotary drive member is formed by injection molding plastics material to provide a unitary, one-piece plastics member that envelops selected portions of a pair of inner and outer insert members that extend concentrically about the shaft rotation axis and that are formed from metal. The inner insert takes the form of an elongate, tubular metal sleeve that defines inner diameter portions of the hub portion of the rotary member. The outer insert takes the form of an annular metal disc that extends radially with respect to the shaft rotation axis to define portions of the radially extending web. The injection-molded plastics member envelopes the periphery of the tubular inner insert, envelopes inner and outer diameter regions of the annular outer insert, serves to rigidly drivingly interconnect the inner and outer inserts, and defines selected parts of the hub and rim portions of the rotary drive member including a drive formation on the rim for engaging another drive member such as a gear, chain or a belt.

A vibratory finishing machine has an elongated tub including a longitudinally extending wall closed at opposite ends. A discharge passage is provided through one of the tub ends and communicates with a discharge spout having an inclined U-shaped terminal edge. A flexible closure is draped over the discharge spout and engages the terminal edge to retain workpieces and media in the tub. An adjustable weight arrangement is provided on the closure for selectively controlling the closing force operative between the closure and the terminal edge. Workpieces and media in the discharge spout bear against the closure and bias the closure in an opening direction. When the opening force imposed by the workpieces and media exceeds the closing force applied by the weight arrangement, the closure opens to discharge workpieces and media from the tub.

A bowl-type vibratory finishing machine is disclosed which employs an extremely simple yet highly effective arrangement of components enabling a relatively low-energy-input drive system to efficiently impart an extraordinarily aggressive finishing action to a mixture of workpieces and finishing media contained within an annular, trough-like finishing chamber defined by a movably supported bowl. The finishing chamber extends substantially horizontally about a substantially vertical center axis. An eccentrically weighted drive shaft extends along the center axis and is journaled by bearings which are connected to the bowl so that, when the drive shaft is rotated, vibrations generated by the unbalanced nature of the drive shaft are transmitted to the bowl and cause the bowl to vibrate generally about a nodal point located along the central axis. A feature of the invention lies in the proper selection of a nodal point location which maximizes the efficiency of the vibratory impulses that are imparted to the contents of the bowl, and which permits a truly aggressive finishing action to be effected utilizing a relatively low-energy-input drive. A further feature of the invention lies in the provision of a relatively flexible drive shaft restraint which assists in assuring that the bowl tends to gyrate substantially about a selected nodal point location so that the desired type of aggressive finishing action is achieved with efficiency of operation. Still another feature lies in the simplification which the present invention brings to the art of designing bowl-type vibratory finishing machines.

A vibratory finishing machine has a bowl structure supported by shear-loaded elastomeric mounts, and a drive system for vibrating the bowl structure about a node or null point located along a vertical center axis of the bowl structure. Each of the elastomeric mounts has one portion secured to the bowl structure, and another portion secured to a base structure. The one and another portions define an axis of each mount, and the mounts are arranged such that their axes intersect the center axis at the node or null point. The bowl structure is provided with a resilient liner assembly formed from clamped-together, individually replaceable, resilient liner components. A discharge opening is provided in the bottom of one of the liner components and is selectively closed by either a solid plug or a plug having openings formed therethrough to continually drain liquids and strain fines from the chamber defined by the liner assembly.
