The bowl sits on a removable separator basin in a media sealed manner and both are removably mounted to vibrator. The bowl has an apertured-bottom through which media can be conveniently removed for separation from cases while the vibrator continues to operate. A peripherally-located funnel is provided at the bottom of the separator basin to facilitate discharge of media into a collection pan for reuse. Several embodiments are described.

A vibratory finishing machine has a bowl structure supported by elastomeric mounts, and a drive system for vibrating the bowl structure about a node point located along a vertical center axis of the bowl structure. Each of the elastomeric mounts has one portion secured to the bowl structure, and another portion secured to a base structure. The one and another portions define an axis of each mount. The mounts are located in a horizontal plane in which the node point lies and are arranged such that their axes intersect the center axis above the node point. An adjustable eccentric weight assembly permits the gyratory characteristics of the bowl structure to be changed to meet different operating requirements. An improved unloading system includes a handle-actuated pivotal ramp member formed of a synthetic material, the ramp member having steps formed on its surface. A screen assembly includes a support structure which ensures that effective media/workpiece separation occurs.

A system for unloading finished workpieces from a bowl-type vibratory finishing machine utilizes a structure defining a channel overlying a portion of the bowl, and a removable ramp member which is insertable into and removable from the bowl for selectively directing finishing media and finished workpieces from the bowl into the channel. The channel is provided with a screen through which media entering the channel will fall back into the bowl and across which finished workpieces entering the channel will pass for discharge. The ramp member is of novel, foldable construction to facilitate its insertion into and removal from the bowl. In preferred practice, the floor of the bowl is provided with a mound-shaped formation having a substantially horizontally extending top surface. The ramp member has an upper end region which is engageable with the channel-defining structure and a lower end region which is engageable with the mound-shaped formation. The ramp member cooperates with the mound-shaped formation to direct finishing media and finished workpieces from the floor of the bowl upwardly into the channel. The mound-shaped formation is hollow and provides passages for channeling fines and liquids from the bowl to drain.

A vibratory finishing machine having a fixed frame and a floating support resiliently mounted thereon, a finishing chamber mounted on the floating support, a gyratory motion-producing assembly affixed to the support eccentrically mounted on a shaft and a motor operatively coupled thereto. The finishing chamber is divided into two parts, one part rotatively mounted and having at least an inner vertical wall, and a stationary portion affixed to the floating support. A second motor is mounted in fixed relationship with the floating support and operatively coupled to rotate the rotatably-mounted portion of the chamber. The rotational or centrifugal rotation of the rotatably-mounted portion of the chamber provides greatly improved finishing efficiency of the apparatus. Additionally, the gyrational motion of the chamber produced by the first motor and accompanying eccentric weights may be used to provide automatic discharge of the parts, and may also be used for finishing parts operated either by itself or in combination with the centrifugal rotation produced by rotating the rotatable portion of the chamber.

The finishing chamber and the part-isolating means are movable with respect to each other. As a result, as the part moves along the finishing chamber during the course of the finishing process, the compartment defined by the part-isolating means, e.g., partitions, moves longitudinally with the part and isolates it from other parts. In one embodiment of the invention, the part-isolating means, such as partitions for defining compartments for the parts, also moves vertically or pivotally with respect to the finishing chamber, e.g., to clear rises therein. Thus, in effect, the compartment surrounding the part and isolating it from other parts, moves with the part. In all embodiments the partitions are arranged to move longitudinally with the parts, and means are provided for retarding or stopping the parts longitudinally. Means is provided for separating finishing material from the parts and discharging finished parts. The finishing machines may be curvilinear or annular gyratory motion-type machines, linear tub-type machines, or any of various types of tumbling machines.
