Abstract:
A magnetic head slider has a protective film which forms, at a portion of an air bearing surface nearer to the air incoming side from the center, a hill-shaped crown of a desired height sufficient in terms of the mechanical durability of the protective film by a variation of the film thickness of the protective film and which is flat with a film thickness of 10 nm or less on the air outgoing side at which a magnetic head element is provided. This protective film may be a diamond-like carbon film (DLC) or a single layer structure of polycrystalline Si or else a layered structure of a combination of them.
Abstract:
A ferroelectric thin film (6) is formed on the surface of a support spring (4) for pressing a magnetic head (3) against a magnetic disc (1) so that the magnetic head (3) is in close contact with the magnetic disc (1). When the magnetic head (3) jumps out of the magnetic disc (1), electrostatic attractive force acts between the ferroelectric thin film (6) and the magnetic disc (1) to prevent the jumping of the magnetic head (3). Further, when the magnetic head (3) is excessively pressed against the magnetic disc (1), electrostatic repulsive force acts between the ferroelectric thin film (6) and the magnetic disc (1) to prevent the pressing force from increasing, thereby preventing the magnetic head (3) and the magnetic recording surface of the magnetic disc (1) from being worn or scratched.
Abstract:
A magnetic disk device includes a magnetic head for performing recording and reproduction with respect to a magnetic disk medium, and an actuator for driving the magnetic head. The magnetic head includes a magnetic recording/reproducing element, a contact magnetic head slider on which the magnetic recording/reproducing element is mounted, the magnetic head slider having a press load of 1 gf or less, and a mass of 2 mg or more, and a support mechanism for supporting the magnetic head slider.
Abstract:
It is an object of the present invention to improve reliability to a dust or the like of a magnetic disk device. The magnetic disk device of the present invention comprises a magnetic disk 10, a levitation type magnetic head slider 12 and a controller 14 for controlling an operation of the magnetic head slider 12 and the controller 14. The controller 14 moves the magnetic head slider 12 to a CSS (Contact Start Stop) region of the magnetic disk 10 at a predetermined time interval and performs a CSS operation at least once.
Abstract:
A magnetic head slider in a magnetic disc drive system has a contact pad on a liquid bearing surface of the slider which bears on liquid applied on the magnetic disc. Each molecule of the liquid has at least two-polar groups for bridging the contact pad and the magnetic disc by intermolecular force. The bridging prevents the magnetic head slider from jumping over the magnetic disc.

Abstract:
An air bearing magnetic head slider includes a slider body carrying a preselected write/read device thereon. A preselected air stream flows in the vicinity of one major surface of the slider body during operation. At least a pair of side rails are formed on the major surface of the slider body and extend along the air stream. A cross rail connects the air inlet ends of the side rails. The side rails each is formed with preselected grooves each of which is delimited by the bottom wall substantially parallel to the major surface of the slider body and side walls connecting the bottom wall and the surface of the side rail. The bottom wall and each side wall are inclined by an angle of less than 90 degrees relative to each other.
