An apparatus for feeding documents from a stack of documents, in single file, into a document track, with the apparatus employing an endless belt. The endless belt is mounted on a drive roller and an idler roller to provide a linear portion of the belt which is parallel to the first document to be fed from the stack. The apparatus also includes a retard mechanism which includes a first portion to engage the documents in the stack and also includes a second portion which is parallel to the linear portion of the endless belt and is biased towards the linear portion by a tension spring. The endless belt is made of a material which is designed to wear instead of "glazing" which provides for a positive feed. The endless belt and the retard member are designed to be replaced by an operator of the terminal in which the apparatus is located so as to avoid a service call by a maintenance person.

A dual drive document deskew and sheet feeder. Paper sheets of various sizes and thicknesses are joggled and aligned into a stack relative to one side and a top of the documents, for example, and the stack is placed in a hinged hopper which is pivoted to be raised relative to left and right special picker rollers. Left and right drive rollers located downstream in a feeding direction from the picker rollers are independently driven by left and right drive stepper motors. Sensors which interact with the leading edge of a document are used to sense whether the document is skewed relative to the feeding direction. A controller receives the outputs from the sensors, and the outputs are used to dynamically deskew the document so that it can be fed into a document receiving apparatus in a deskewed or aligned orientation. The special picker rollers subject the top document being fed to alternating high and low friction forces which minimizes double feeds. Stripper rollers, having one way clutches associated therewith and operating with the associated drive rollers, may be used to return a document to the hopper if the document is too skewed to be deskewed within the parameters of the system.

A plate is movable relative to the horizontal surface and advances the stack of documents along the horizontal surface towards the document feeding mechanism as the plate moves relative to the horizontal surface. A body is movable between different positions and, when moved between different positions, provides a variable force which acts on the stack of documents as the documents are being fed to the document feeding mechanism. The position of the body depends upon the position of the plate relative to the horizontal surface. The body is coupled to the plate in a manner to allow the body to move between different positions to provide the variable force which acts on the stack of documents while the plate is advancing the stack of documents along the horizontal surface towards the document feeding mechanism.

A document feeder apparatus is provided for feeding documents along a document feed path. The document feeder apparatus comprises a picker mechanism for picking a number of documents from a stack of documents stored in a hopper and moving the picked documents along the document feed path. An advance mechanism includes an advance roller having a longitudinal central axis and being rotatable about its longitudinal axis. The advance roller has an outer circumferential surface which is engageable with one side of the picked document moving along the document feed path. A retard mechanism includes an endless retard belt having an outer major side surface which is engageable with the opposite side of the picked document moving along the document path. The outer major side surface of the endless retard belt and the outer circumferential surface of the advance roller cooperate to define at least a portion of the document feed path therebetween. Tension is applied to the endless retard belt such that a relatively constant pinch pressure is applied to the picked document while the picked document is moving along that portion of the document feed path between the outer major side surface of the endless retard belt and the outer circumferential surface of the advance roller.

A high speed apparatus for pocketing documents in a pocket. A document to be pocketed is diverted from a document track towards a cupping apparatus by a pocket selector. The cupping apparatus includes an initial cupping rib and first, second, and third drive rollers, with a metal pinch roller being positioned opposite the second drive roller to cup a document to be pocketed. The leading edge of the cupped document encounters a document spring to create a "travelling wave" which functions to push the trailing edges of documents already pocketed away from an entry point to the pocket to enable the document to be pocketed to enter the pocket without collision and to enter in the right order. The document spring has a rectangular opening in each end thereof to enable the end to be secured to a rectangular boss located on a guide member within the apparatus to provide a quick change construction.
