An electroacoustic simulation method and apparatus for imitating electroastically the human outer ear having transmission properties corresponding to those of the human outer ear when exposed to sound in the free field is proposed, wherein the physical acoustical causes of the outer ear, the head, the upper part of the body, the pinna rim, and the like, are represented mathematically by simple partial models and approximated in the form of electric circuits containing circuit elements such as high-pass filters, low-pass filters, all-pass filters . . . and the like, with the possibility to vary certain properties of the circuit elements continuously by varying the parameters so that arbitrary directions of sound incidence can be adjusted infinitely in the horizontal and median planes.

A method determines and optionally eliminates a disturbing noise subjectively perceived by an operator, particularly a disturbing noise of a vehicle. The vehicle is operated by the operator complaining of the disturbing noise. Noise effects are recorded during the operation of the vehicle, particularly in the region of the operator's ear. From all sound effects, a noise sequence is taken which contains the disturbing noise. The noise sequence is played to the operator. If the noise sequence is at least similar to the disturbing noise, the noise sequence is converted to a sequential frequency spectrum using a mathematical algorithm. In the present sequential frequency spectrum, at least one frequency or group of frequencies is manipulated; from the manipulated frequency spectrum. A manipulation noise is generated and is played to the operator for evaluation the change of the disturbing noise. If the disturbing noise is reduced or removed in the manipulation noise, a corresponding repair is carried out.

By means of an active filter with free-field sound exposure from the front, a system is provided which assures a frequency response of a microphone's transmission functions which is comparable with that of a measurement microphone, so that this system on the one hand analyzes acoustic phenomena in the conventional manner and, additionally, in the case of reproduction via a free-field, distortion-corrected headset to the eardrums of a listening person, generates the same sound pressure signals as if the person were located at the place of sound recording, while, on the other hand, in the case of reproduction via loudspeakers no annoying acoustic contamination occurs. The entire artifical head system is designed for either a.c. or battery operation and is combined with an analog or digital recording unit to produce a self-sufficient recording and reproduction system.

The head portion comprises partial bodies corresponding to mean data of test persons with respect to dimensions and relative positions. The partial bodies comprise regular geometric bodies calibrated with respect to sound reflexion, diffraction and resonance behavior to define a reproducible artificial-head transmission function related to the outer geometric configuration of the construction.

The primary oscillations which are produced when the vehicle is being operated are determined. Data for secondary oscillations are acquired from the primary oscillations and are converted at least in part into vibration oscillations which can be perceived through the human body. At least one of the components of the vehicle body is excited using the vibration oscillations, the vibration oscillations being placed in an interference relationship with the primary oscillations. In particular, the steering wheel is also excited so as to undergo mechanical vibration oscillations.

In the method, the primary oscillations which are produced when a vehicle to be investigated is being operated and which are perceived subjectively are registered. Data for generating secondary oscillations are acquired from the primary oscillations and are converted into the secondary oscillations, and a simulation unit, which simulates, among other things, in particular a passenger car representationally at least in certain areas, is operated. In the simulation unit which is elastically mounted or secured with respect to the floor, vibration oscillations, which are acquired from the primary oscillations, are induced at a location from which they are transmitted into a seat and/or into the steering wheel. In order to determine the source of the complaints, specific frequencies of the vibration oscillations are then changed selectively.
