The magnetic encoder of the present invention includes a magnetic signal generating drum having plural magnetic pole lines respectively having different magnetization pitches. Magnetic signals are repeatedly generated from the plural magnetic pole lines. A magnetic sensor is provided which includes plural magnetic resistant effect elements for converting the respective magnetic signals generated from the plural magnetic pole lines into electric signals. The plural magnetic resistant effect elements respectively confront the plural magnetic pole lines and output electric signals of different pulse numbers in accordance with incident magnetic signals. The magnetic signals generated from the plural magnetic poles lines and incident on the magnetic resistant effect elements are less that an anisotropic magnetic field level of the respective magnetic resistant effect elements. As such, respective values and waveform shapes of signals output by each of the magnetic resistant effect elements is substantially the same.

The thin-film magnetic head comprises a gap layer, coil layer, insulating layer, and top magnetic pole layer stacked in sequence on the bottom magnetic pole layer, and a magnetic gap formed at the end position of the gap layer. The top magnetic pole layer is magnetically joined to the bottom magnetic pole layer over the whole width at the opposite position of the magnetic gap. All these enable an easy production of the thin-film magnetic head keeping the magnetic resistance of the magnetic circuit small and having a structure appropriate to a higher recording density.

A manufacturing method that can manufacture small thin film magnetic head sliders with high dimensional accuracy and high manufacturing yield is disclosed. This manufacturing method uses 5 inch- or 6 inch-dia. substrate wafers having a thickness sufficient to keep wafer bending to a minimum level even after thin film magnetic head elements have been formed on it. On the front side surface of the substrate wafer formed are thin film magnetic elements. After a protective layer covered on the surface of the thin film magnetic head elements has been ground and/or lapped, the back side surface of the substrate wafer is ground and/or lapped to a thickness equal to a desired slider length.
