摘要: Various fluoropolymers have been proposed for imparting oil and water repellency to leather. Commonly, these fluoropolymers are amphiphilic; i.e., they are made from at least one monomer which is hydrophobic and at least one monomer which is hydrophilic. The present invention identifies and remedies disadvantages associated with the ability of amphiphilic fluoropolymers to impart oil and water repellency to leather. Contrary to conventional thinking, it has now been discovered that the incorporation of hydrophilic groups in a fluoropolymer undesirably reduces its ability to impart water resistance to leather. Correspondingly, it has also been discovered that a fluoropolymer incorporating fewer or no hydrophilic groups imparts superior oil and water repellency to leather when compared to fluoropolymers incorporating more hydrophilic groups. Therefore, this invention provides fluoropolymers which incorporate reduced levels of hydrophilic groups.

摘要: A method of imparting oil repellency to flexible, fibrous, nonwoven substrates comprising contacting the substrate with an amphoteric fluorochemical copolymer composition prepared from polymerization of monomers in the following percentages by weight: (a) from about 60% to about 90% of a fluorinated (meth)acrylate monomer of Formula 1 which is Rf-Q-CO—CR═CH2, (b) from about 10% to about 25% of an amine substituted (meth)acrylate or (meth)acylamide monomer of Formula 2 which is CH2═C(R)COZ(CH2)q(CHR)rNR2R3, and (c) from about 1% to about 15% of a substituted (meth)acrylic acid monomer of Formula 3 which is CH2=CR(R5)e—COOH.

摘要: A method of imparting oil repellency to flexible, fibrous, nonwoven substrates comprising contacting the substrate with a composition prepared from polymerization of monomers in the following percentages by weight: (a) from about 60% to about 90% of a monomer of Formula 1 or a mixture thereof: Rf-Q-CO—CR═CH2 Formula 1 wherein: Rf is a straight- or branched-chain perfluoroalkyl group of 2 to about 20 carbon atoms, R is H or CH3, Q is —(CnH2n)pSO2NR1(CnH2nO)y—, wherein the —(CnH2n) is bonded to Rf, and R1 is H or C1-C20 alkyl; (b) from about 10% to about 25% of a monomer of Formula 2 or a mixture thereof: CH2═C(R)COZ(CH2)q(CHR)rNR2R3 Formula 2 wherein R2 and R3 are each independently C1-C4 alkyl, hydroxyethyl, or benzyl or R2 and R3 together with the nitrogen atom form a morpholine, pyrrolidine, or piperidine ring, and Z is —O— or —NR4— wherein R4 is H or C1-C4 alkyl; and (c) from about 1% to about 15% of a monomer of Formula 3 or a mixture thereof: CH2═CR(R5)e—COOH Formula 3 wherein R5 is CO(CH2)5, CO—O—(CH2)2, C6H4CHR, or CONRR6, and R6 is C6H4OCH2, (CH2)d, or C(CH3)2CH2.
