摘要： An improved sliding pipe joint seal for use in sealing an annular space created between a sealing surface of a spigot at an end of a length of pipe and a sealing surface of a bell shaped end of another length of pipe when the two pipes are connected end-to-end. The pipe joint seal includes an annular body having an inner gripping surface and an outer tab. The gripping surface is adapted to engage the sealing surface of the spigot to retain the seal thereon. The body has a normally closed annular chamber storing a lubricant, such as a grease. An annular slit in the body extends into the chamber forming a flap intermediate the slit and tab. The slit is spread apart when the bell shaped end engages the seal as the pipes are joined, thereby releasing the grease against the sealing surface of the bell shaped end as the seal slides over the remainder of the sealing surface of the bell shaped end.

摘要： A method for connecting a sewer pipe to a larger pipe or manhole wherein the connection between the pipe and manhole opening is sealed by means of an elastomeric gasket or boot. A rigid ring is inserted within one end of an elastomeric boot, which has an outer diameter slightly larger than the inner diameter of the opening in the manhole. The boot is inserted into the opening up to the enlarged end, a jacking device is inserted through the gasket, and a circular, stepped plate is connected to the end of the jacking device which has been inserted through the gasket so that it is positioned to engage the end of the gasket assembly having the ring inserted therein. The jacking device includes a spider element which is braced against the outer wall of the manhole, and the device is operated such that the plate is drawn toward the spider thereby pulling the gasket and ring into the opening wherein the gasket is compressed between the opening and the rigid ring so that a compressive water-tight seal is achieved. In the disclosed embodiment of the invention, the jacking device comprises a threaded rod secured to the plate at one end and threadedly connected to a nut at the other end, which is turned by means of a ratchet device so as to draw the rod, stepped plate and gasket assembly into the opening.

摘要： A method for connecting a sewer pipe to a larger pipe or manhole wherein the connection between the pipe and manhole opening is sealed by means of an elastomeric gasket or boot. In one embodiment of the invention, the pipe is inserted into the manhole opening and an annular elastomeric gasket is positioned over the annular space between the pipe and opening. An extensible jack, which has an annular plunger element having a diameter substantially equal to that of the gasket, is braced against the wall of the manhole opposite the opening and extended so as to press the gasket between the opening and pipe. In an alternative embodiment, a rigid ring is inserted within one end of an elastomeric boot such that the outer diameter of the boot-ring assembly is slightly larger than the inner diameter of the opening. The boot is inserted into the opening up to the enlarged end, the jack is braced against the opposite wall of the manhole and extended thereby pressing the gasket and ring into the opening. Due to the elastomeric nature of the boot, it is compressed between the manhole opening and the rigid ring so that a compressive watertight seal is achieved.
