An electrophotographic copying machine having duplexing mode of operation and first and second selectively enabled sheet supply stations. The first supply station has a feeding device which turns the copy sheet to be fed upside down before delivering it to the conveyor moving the copy-sheet toward transfer station. In the duplexing mode of operation sheets fed from the second station are one side imaged along the copy-sheet path and are collected in the first section. Then one side imaged copy sheets are fed from the first supply station and are imaged on the other side along the copy-sheet path. A storage tray with adjustable stops is provided in said first supply station to handle copy sheets of different formats.

In a reproducing machine the photoconductive member, in the form of an endless belt, and the developing station are carried in a container or cartridge removably mounted on the machine. The photoconductive belt surrounds a support structure integral with the cartridge. The support structure includes a resilient portion engaging the photoconductive belt to keep it under tension around the structure. A magnetic belt of tubular form, fixed within the cartridge, is surrounded by a sleeve of non-magnetic material. The magnetic belt is so magnetized as to form a regular distribution of pairs of magnetic poles of opposite polarity. The toner adheres by magnetic action on the external surface of the sleeve to form a magnetic brush of the developing station.

A first carriage carries a lamp for illuminating the original and a first mirror. A second carriage carries two mirrors and moves at half the speed of the carriage so that a constant optical path length is maintained from the original, via the three mirrors and a focusing lens to a rotating image receptor drum. The carriages are driven by individual motors via pulleys and belts and, during scanning, the speeds of the two motors are controlled in sympathy to move the carriage at a speed corresponding to the selected reduction/enlargement factor and to move the carriage at half this speed. Before scanning, only the second motor is energized to position the second carriage in accordance with the said factor. In a modified embodiment, a clutch couples the two carriages for movement at the correct relative speeds during scanning which is effected solely by means of the first motor. The initial positioning of the carriage by the second motor is effected with the clutch disengaged.

Electrophotographic copying machine comprising a discharge device for discharging the area of the movable photoconductive element which exceeds the area of the copy-sheet residing in the machine. The discharge device comprises a lamp and a mask interposed between the lamp and the photoconductive surface, the mask has a plurality of slots, each slot being associated to a copy-sheet format; each slot comprises a first portion for discharging the margin zones of the photoconductive element, which zones has a length equal to the difference between the width of the photoconductive element and a dimension of the copy-sheet format selected; and a second portion for discharging the entire width of the photoconductive element, the second portion is positioned in front of the lamp after that a length of the photoconductive element equal to the other dimension of the format has been moved in front of the discharge device.
