Abstract: The present invention is directed to the combination of respiratory data from two or more different sensors in order to generate a combined waveform. The system of the present invention may comprise a set of two strain sensors, each strain sensor comprising a bare sensor and an adhesive layer to apply said sensors to the skin of a patient, one on the chest and one on the abdomen. The system may further comprise a computing device connected to both strain sensors in some form. As the distention of the patient's skin puts strain on the strain sensors, waveforms are transmitted from the sensors to the computing device where both waveforms are combined into a singular waveform.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the standardization of prestrain applied to a sensor of an external respiratory measurement device. The method may comprise sandwiching the sensor between two adhesive layers and stretching the sensor by a fixed amount in order to match the length of the device to the length of a support layer. The device may then be covered by the support layer in order to keep the sensor in a state of prestrain, such that the length of the device matches the length of the support layer. The device may then be applied to the surface by the lower adhesive layer, and the support layer may then be removed, thus leaving the sensor in a standardized and optimal state of prestrain.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the measurement of a baseline respiratory level in a patient so that changes in respiratory activity can be easily reported. The baseline measurement is collected by a sensor in the patient's chest and a sensor on the patient's abdomen, and is transmitted to a computing device. The computing device measures normal breathing for 60 seconds and uses the waveform collected over this period of time to generate a baseline RR, tidal volume, and minute ventilation. From this point, the patient's RR, tidal volume, and minute ventilation are recorded and compared to the baseline measurements, and if a change from the baseline measurement that exceeds a predetermined threshold is detected, the doctor is alerted that action must be taken for the patient's safety.

Abstract: A wearable strain sensor for measuring respiration volume and respiration rate is described herein. The wearable strain sensor includes a flexible yet not stretchable connector that connects soft electronics to hard electronics. The flexible and non-stretch able connector removes stress/strain from the soft/hard interface, thereby preventing damage to sensor components and maintaining electrical connection.
