Identification data corresponding to an identity of an associated user and accounting data corresponding to each of a plurality of billing accounts is communicated with an associated portable data storage. Data corresponding to each of the plurality of billing accounts is displayed, and selection data is received corresponding to at least one billing account corresponding to the plurality of billing accounts associated with the display of data. An associated document processing device is enabled in accordance with selection data and identification data received from the portable data storage. Usage of the document processing device is monitored relative to received selection data, and usage data corresponding to monitored usage of the document processing device with associated billing account data is communicated to an associated administrator.

At least one document for processing is received, as well as document processing instructions for performing a selected document processing operation on a received document. A state of each of a plurality of functions associated with completion of the selected document processing operation is calculated, and each of a plurality of sub-functions corresponding to the plurality of functions is enabled. Timing data is generated for timing operation of each of a plurality of sub-functions in accordance with pre-selected timing characteristics. Control instructions are received, and operation of each of the plurality of sub-functions is controlled in a pre-selected order while enabled in accordance with timing data, state data, and the control instructions.

摘要： The subject application is directed to a system and method for extensible document processing. The startup of a plurality of document processing services on an associated document processing device is controlled via a service startup manager. Each of the document processing services is then interfaced with a control system via a device level interface. Data is communicated between the device level interface and an external data processing device via an agent layer interface. The agent layer interface is registered with the service startup manager. A startup of the document processing device is then commenced in accordance with the control of the service startup manager. A document processing control display is generated on a user interface associated with the document processing device, with the display including indicia corresponding to one of the functions of the external data processing device according to the agent layer interface.

摘要： A system and method for selectively outsourcing document processing operations from a document processing device. The document processing device analyzes a submitted document processing job from a user and determines whether external devices are available and capable of performing some or all of the requested document processing operations. When external devices are available and capable, the document processing device performs any necessary local preprocessing and forwards information related to the document processing job to one of the external devices. The external device then processes the data and returns the processed data to the document processing device. The document processing device then performs any remaining document processing operations and the job is thereupon output according to the selected document processing operation.

The system and method is for use with a document processing system wherein multiple copies of a document are generated and each copy of the document has a unique output characteristic which distinguishes that copy from the other copies of the document set. In one embodiment, each copy has at least one of a unique watermark inserted or applied to the copy or is generated on a unique output medium so as to distinguish such copy from the other copies in the document set.

The user then is prompted, via a user interface, to select an icon corresponding to the type of document processing operation desired. The document processing device then performs the document processing operation immediately following the selection of the icon on the personalized display screen.
