A method for completing a transaction including receiving a credit card payment request at a card reader. The payment request can include a payment amount and a micropayment account identification identifying a pre-pay account or a post-pay account. In the event the payment request is for a pre-pay type of account and the payment amount is greater than a balance associated with the account, then a credit card account associated with the micropayment account is charged with a top off amount plus the difference between the payment amount and the remaining balance. In the event, the payment request is for a post-pay type of account and the payment amount is greater than the balance associate with the account, then a credit account associated with the micropayment account is charged with an amount equal to a credit limit plus the difference between the payment amount and the remaining credit.

Methods and apparatus for conducting electronic commerce using electronic tokens are described. The electronic tokens are issued and maintained by a vendor, who also provides products and services that can be purchased or rented using the electronic tokens. The electronic tokens may be purchased from the vendor either on-line, using a credit card, or off-line, using a check, money order, purchase order, or other payment means. Because the vendor is the issuer of the electronic tokens, there is no need for transactions to be handled by a third party, such as a bank or other organization. This reduces the overhead involved in conducting electronic commerce, and provides the vendor with a greater amount of control. Additionally, the vendor maintains total control over the price of the electronic tokens at any time. For vendors who offer software products for sale or rental, use of electronic tokens makes a variety of rental arrangements practical including rental for short periods of time, for a specific number of uses, or for a specific number of processing.

Systems and methods are provided for distributing content such as audio, video, and text files to users over a communications network such as the Internet. Content owners may store content items at content provider computers. A catalog provider computer may be used to host a catalog that lists the various content items available from the content owners. Vendors having vendor websites operating on vendor computers may view the content information in the catalog to determine which content items to offer on the websites. Users may select a desired content item to purchase at a vendor's website. When a user clicks on an appropriate purchase option, a micropayment service provider computer handles the purchase transaction. The purchased content item may then be delivered to the user from an appropriate one of the content provider computers.

A method and apparatus are provided for removing noise from a first digital representation of data images and noise images of a document, including digitally scanning the document so as to produce the first digital representation of all the images of the document, including the data images and the noise images. After de-skewing the image representation, objects are built from a reduced-resolution representation of the scanned representation. Objects identified as picture objects are included in a mask which is logically ANDed with the de-skewed representation of the scanned document. All objects are added to an object list and initially marked as noise. Objects identified as text objects or geometric objects are marked as data objects. Objects identified as picture objects are included in a mask which is logically ANDed with the de-skewed representation to eliminate all other objects. Objects marked as data objects are added to that representation to provide the de-skewed, de-speckled representation of the scanned document.

Methods and apparatus for conducting offline commerce transactions that use a barcode as an alternative means for personal identification. The user represented in the bar code format, User ID Barcode, is generated from a number that uniquely identifies the user. Numbers such as a cell phone number or a credit card number may be used to generate the User ID Barcode. These numbers are prefixed with a special character before they are converted to the barcode format. Prefixing a special character is necessary so that the bar code generated can be distinguished from any bar code representing products being sold. If a credit card number is used, the User ID Barcode is printed on the back of the credit card which then becomes a 2 and 1 credit card.

A process of transferring funds between two entities or persons is described; the process includes transferring funds from person A to-person B and reversing the process allowing refunds. The processes are performed through a Universal Vendor Management Server (UVM) where both entities A and B are registered and have opened UVM accounts. The funds transfer and refund processes permit the transfer of funds between the respective accounts and the charging of service fees to the entity initiating the transfer or refund process. No third party other than the UVM operator is involved in the transactions such as banks, credit card companies, and the like. The funds transfer may be achieved utilizing a cell phone to make a purchase at a participating vendor. A person enters an amount of payment in the cell phone; the amount is subtracted from the purchasers account and added to the account of the vendor.
