A current/voltage converting unit converts the output current into a voltage. A digitizing unit digitizes a level of the voltage into a digital value which is one of consecutive numbers from 0 to a predetermined maximum number. A ratio of the digital value to the predetermined maximum number is calculated. An input current supplied to the light-emitting element is varied so that an intensity of the light emitted by the light-emitting element is varied in accordance with the ratio.
