摘要: 901,049. Photo-electric control of vehicle headlamps. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. July 29, 1960 [Aug. 7, 1959], No. 26493/60. Class 40 (3). A vehicle headlight system for producing main and dipped beams of which at least the main light beam is polarized comprises a detector and controlling means such that only the dipped beam is produced if light incident upon the detector is unpolarized, but if the incident light is polarized identically with the main beam that beam is produced. The detector may comprise three photo-cells 12, 22 and 24 (the last two having plane-polarizing screens 30 and 32, respectively, in front of them whose axes of polarization are approximately at right angles), the outputs of cells 22 and 24 being supplied in opposition to a differential relay 16 and that of cell 12 via a contact of the differential relay to a relay 20. Incidence of unpolarized light does not cause operation of the differential relay so that the relay 20 is operated and only the dipped beam lamps, 52 and 54, are illuminated. The incidence of suitably polarized light causes operation of the differential relay so that relay 20 releases and lamps 44 and 42, whose light is polarized by screens 48 and 50 respectively, produce the main beam. A window 56 of polarizing material is also included in the system for avoiding glare from the headlights of oncoming vehicles. In other embodiments (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), only one photo-cell is used, and circular-, instead of plane-, polarization may be used. The optimum alignment of the axes of polariza. tion for plane-polarized systems is discussed. U.S.A. Specification 2,458,179 is referred to.
