In essence, there is provided an intuitive concept of manipulating and editing a computer-generated surface, by employing a combination of traditional input and output devices (keyboard, mouse, display, etc.) and a novel device that enables users to touch, edit and modify a physical representation of the surface. A system and method for seamlessly combining client-only rendering techniques with server-only rendering techniques. The approach uses a composite stream containing three distinct streams. One stream is available to send geometry from the server to the client. Another stream contains video with transparent pixels that allow the client-rendered object to appear in the context of the server rendered objects. The third stream contains camera information. The invention can satisfy a number of viewing applications. For example, initially the most relevant geometry can stream to the client for high quality local rendering while the server delivers renderings of less relevant geometry at lower resolutions. After the most relevant geometry has been delivered to the client, the less important geometry can be optionally streamed to the client to increase the fidelity of the entire scene. In the limit, all of the geometry is transferred to the client and the situation corresponds to client-only rendering system where local graphics hardware is used to improve fidelity and reduce bandwidth. Alternatively, if a client does not have local three-dimensional graphics capability then the server can transmit only the video of the server-rendered object and drop the other two streams. In either case, the approach also permits for a progressive improvement in the server-rendered image whenever the scene becomes static. Bandwidth that was previously used to represent changing images is allocated to improving the fidelity of the server-rendered image whenever the scene becomes static.

A presently preferred computer implemented method for generating a simplified model of a geometric model includes a first step of visualizing a geometric model from at least one viewpoint and then sampling surfaces of the visualized geometric model, from the at least one viewpoint, to generate a set of primary sample points. A next step executes a polyhedral synthesis technique using the set of primary sample points by the steps of performing a three dimensional Delaunay triangulation of the primary sample points to generate triangles; performing alpha-solid extraction using the generated triangles; and executing a boundary computation on the extracted alpha-solid to obtain the simplified model. An optional step refines the simplified model using a set of secondary sample points.

These criteria include: (a) selecting a center of the grid cell as a position of the representative vertex; (b) selecting a position of a predetermined one of the vertices within the grid cell as a position of the representative vertex; (c) selecting an average position of the vertices as a position of the representative vertex; (d) selecting a position of a vertex that is nearest to the average position as a position of the representative vertex; and (e) selecting a position of a vertex that represents a locally extreme point within the grid cell as a position of the representative vertex.
