A two-needle sewing machine includes a machine casing having a sewing head mounting the needles, a work support plate, and a ripping knife supported in the sewing head and working between the needles to form an elongated slot of a braid opening in a cut garment piece. A supporting bar is guided in the machine casing for longitudinal displacement perpendicular to the work support plate, and is rotatable into different angular positions. A single angular cross-section cutting knife is mounted on the supporting bar and serves as a tool for making diverging corner cuts at the opposite ends of the elongated slot. Air-operated piston-cylinder actuators are provided to rotate the supporting bar between two positions spaced angularly by 180.degree., and to displace the supporting bar longitudinally to effect the diverging corner cuts. The sewing head mounts a sliding foot arrangement for moving the work in a direction opposite to the normal work feeding direction.

A folding mechanism, for a braid strip, is supported on a table plate, in which there is installed a tow-needle sewing machine having a cutting knife working between the needles, with the folding mechanism being inclined downwardly toward the stitch forming area of the sewing machine. Folding of the braid strip is effected by a shape bar, having an inverted T-shape, adapted to be lowered into a folding groove, in a baseplate of the folding mechanism to fold the braid strip so that its borders extend upwardly. Clamping bars are displaceable parallel to the stem of the shape bar, on opposite sides thereof, to clamp and fold the braid strip around the shape bar. The shape bar is vertically displaceable on a support which is pivotal about an axis parallel to the arm shaft of the sewing machine, between an initial position in which it is aligned with the folding cavity or groove, and a transfer position, aligned with the direction of displacement of a work clamp to deliver the braid strip, and a flap, if one is provided, to the work clamp.

A thread cutter for use in a sewing machine with a rotating hook (12) has a surface cam (60) which, together with a cam follower (58), controls the movement path of a pivotable thread catcher lever (26), which grasps the thread with a thread catcher (30, 36) and severs it at a cutter (82). With known solutions the surface cam is seated on the main shaft of the machine, which results in space-consuming structures with a large amount of parts. It is therefore proposed to connect the surface cam (60) in a torsion-proof manner with the hook (12) and to provide arresting means (38) which, only during a revolution of the hook (12) with the needle raised, maintain the thread catcher lever (26) radially outside the engagement range of the surface cam (60) and only with definite triggering release the thread catcher lever (26) with a cam follower (58) for contact with the surface cam (60). The thread cutter therefore has only very few parts and can be housed without problems in the free arm of a sewing machine in a space-saving manner. Preassembly and pre-setting of the thread cutter, which constitutes one unit with the hook, is also possible.
